Zenhaven Mattress Review
Our Zenhaven mattress review highlights our experience sleeping on this luxury all natural latex mattress from the makers of the Saatva and Loom and Leaf mattress. This 100% Talalay latex mattress is comparable to mattresses 3-4x its price and should definitely be considered if you are in the market for a new mattress.
Saatva is known for their very highly rated innerspring mattress as well as the Loom and Leaf memory foam mattress which is our top rated memory foam mattress.
The company is known for providing very high quality mattresses at a fraction of the price of comparable beds and ships them uncompressed (i.e. not in box) to customers.

.Construction and Materials
The Zenhaven mattress is a 10″ all natural Talalay latex mattress made up of 4 layers of 100% latex, with a unique flippable design which provides two different firmness options in the same mattress.
- 2 ” Comfort Layer -- This layer is made up of 2″ of 100% Talalay latex with a unique 5-zone comfort layer that provides support for different areas of the body and a cool, responsive sleep surface.
- 3″ Support Layer -- This layer is 3″ of denser Talalay latex, with an ILD (indention load deflection -- a measure of firmness) of 25-29 when Luxury Plush is selected. This thicker layer under the top layer provides support and pressure relief.
- 3″ Support Layer -- This layer is 3″ of firmer Talalay latex, with an ILD of 30-34 which when the mattress is in the Firm setting, provides the firmer response from the latex with more pushback and a firmer overall feel. When in the Luxury Plush setting, this layer provides more support beneath the softer upper layers.
- 2 ” Comfort Layer -- This layer is the same 2″ of 100% Talalay latex on the top layer of the mattress that when flipped over becomes the comfort layer.
The Zenhaven mattress uses the more expensive to produce Talalay latex, and on top of that uses American sourced latex, compared to other manufacturers who import their latex from overseas.
Talalay latex is less dense than the other method of producing latex, Dunlop, and provides a more supple and buoyant sleep surface.
Natural Talalay latex provides many health advantages over other materials found in other beds. It is hypoallergenic, and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. It does not contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other chemicals as well.
A unique feature of the Zenhaven is the 5-zone comfort system that provides different density zones on the same mattress. By varying the size and distribution of the “pinholes” created during the latex manufacturing process, different zones are created below the torso and shoulders versus other areas of the body.
The cover of the Zenhaven mattress is made up of 100% organic New Zealand wool which is a natural temperature regulator, which is wrapped in a very soft and luxurious feeling organic cotton cover. The cover lends to the overall high quality luxury feel of the Zenhaven mattress.
Firmness & Support
The Zenhaven mattress is unique among most mattresses we have reviewed in that it comes with two firmness options on the same mattress, which is easily adjusted simply by flipping the mattress over. Both sides have the same cover and comfort layer, but with different firmnesses -- both Gentle Firm and Luxury Plush
On the Luxury Plush side, we felt the mattress was more of a 5-6 out of 10 (10 being firmest) in our experience (the above graph is provided by the company), mainly due to the nature of latex which provides more of a “sleeping on top” of the mattress feel vs. a “sleeping down in” feel that memory foam mattresses provide.
On the Gentle Firm side, the firmer latex feels around a 7-8 out of 10 (10 being firmest), and is markedly firmer than the Luxury Plush setting. Again, this is all personal preference, so having the ability to choose is really nice.
In terms of support, the Zenhaven mattress does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions.
As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.
This 100% latex mattress provides excellent support via the buoyant Talalay latex, providing both pushback where it is needed as well as contouring to your body when necessary.
The unique 5-zone support system really works to provide support in the areas needed most.
For us, the Luxury Plush setting was preferable, as we are primarily side sleepers and like mattresses that conform to our body. The Gentle Firm would be a good choice for back and stomach sleepers, or those that prefer a firmer mattress.
Again, having both options in the same mattress is a great advantage of the Zenhaven, as you can choose your firmness just by flipping over the mattress.
Comfort
We had yet to sleep on a 100% all latex mattress before receiving our Zenhaven. And we have really been missing out. As a rule, we tend to lean towards memory foam mattresses due to our side sleeping preference and wanting our mattress to hug and conform to us during sleep.
However, the Zenhaven changed our opinion on latex, due to the use of the much more premium Talalay latex that is soft and supple and provides great body contouring and comfort as well as the responsiveness that latex is known for.
Most of our experiences with latex to date were with Dunlop latex or synthetic latex foam blends which to us felt too firm and did not provide the hug or body contour we prefer.
The soft organic cotton and wool cover is just leaps and bounds above almost every mattress we have tested (actually very similar to the Loom and Leaf, one of our long-standing favorite memory foam mattresses.)
This quality of materials and construction can be felt from the outset, and is something that normally you would find in a mattress priced 3x what the Zenhaven cost.
Sleeping Hot
The Zenhaven sleeps extremely cool.
Latex as a rule doesn’t trap heat like memory foam, and when combined with the wool layer and organic cotton, dissipates any heat produced by sleepers and keeps the mattress cool.
We did not feel hot or sticky in any way during the night when sleeping on our Zenhaven mattress, which is something that is important for couples and individuals alike.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Zenhaven mattress also does a great job with sinkage and motion transfer. Sinkage was very minimal due to the 100% latex construction, even on the softer Luxury Plush side.
As we commonly say, sinkage (and motion transfer) is dependent on sleeper weight, but I did not sink down or compress the Zenhaven barely at all even weighing 230 lbs as I do.
The fact that I weigh this amount tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.
We commonly experience problems when my weight causes an indentation in the mattress and Kaye “sinks in the hole” as she says. This isn’t the case with the Zenhaven mattress, as the responsiveness and buoyancy of the latex prevents this.
Edge support is very good with this mattress as well, and better than most mattresses we have reviewed.
I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them compressed under my weight.
Motion transfer is also a lot lower than most mattresses we have reviewed, although there is some present due to the nature of latex. However, the dense latex layers do a great job of isolating motion transfer with this mattress.
Neither Kaye nor myself felt any disruption in our sleep or shaking of the mattress when each other changed positions or got in or out of bed during the night.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Zenhaven mattress gets high marks in this category for not having a noticeable smell upon delivery.
Notice we said delivery, in that the mattress does not arrive compressed in a box like other “Bed In A Box” mattresses. Only the Loom and Leaf mattress provides this same delivery method of all the mattresses we have tested to date.
This lack of odor is a result of the all natural Talalay latex that the company uses for the construction of the mattress, which doesn’t cause odor or off-gassing, outside of a small latex smell which dissipates rather rapidly.
Customer Service
Zenhaven provides much more customer service and benefits than the average “Bed in A Box” mattress retailer, mainly by the fact that the mattress is hand delivered to your residence and not shipped compressed in a box.
Additional details include:
- 75 Night Sleep Trial
- 10 Year Warranty
- Made in America
- $99 White Glove shipping and setup of the mattress within your home.
Price
The Zenhaven mattress is priced higher than most mattresses we have tested, but this is also a function of the premium materials used in the construction of the mattress, most particularly the premium Talalay Latex.
The Zenhaven is priced at $2399 for a Queen, which is a good price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress, and is a fraction of what other similar quality all natural latex mattresses on the market currently cost.
Size | Price |
---|---|
Twin | $1399 |
Twin XL | $1599 |
Full | $1999 |
Queen | $2399 |
King | $2999 |
Cal King | $2999 |
Summary
The Zenhaven mattress is an exceptional mattress and one of the highest quality mattresses that we have reviewed, and certainly the most expensive yet a bargain for what you get in this mattress.
The premium materials used in the design of the Zenhaven work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive mattress that is ideal for all sleeping positions and is ideal for couples sharing a bed.
The unique flippable design which provides both Gentle Firm and Luxury Plush firmness options in the same mattress is a great feature and one that gives you the choice of each depending on your preference.
The Zenhaven is extremely comfortable and sleeps cool, and does a great job at minimizing sinkage and motion transfer as well, which is very important for us as couples.
The Zenhaven provides the classic “sleeping on top of” feel of latex while at the same time being soft and supple, which is a really great feeling and something we had not experienced before.
The latex provides plenty of bounce and responsiveness along with cradling your body where it needs it the most which is something we really enjoy.
All in all, the Zenhaven is our top pick for natural latex mattresses and clearly a great alternative to comparable expensive latex mattresses or memory foam brands such as Tempur pedic.
Hopefully this Zenhaven mattress review helps you out in your next purchase decision. If you have any questions, feel free to let us know!
