Firmness & Support

Gel Foam mattresses come in 3 different firmness options, as illustrated above. The Venus 14″ model is their ultra plush model, which we rate at a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, (10 being firmest).

The Miranda 12″ mattress is their Medium Plush model, which we feel comes in around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scaled (10 being firmest).

The Triton 10″ model is their Medium Firm model, which absent the multiple comfort layers that the other mattresses possess comes in around a 7-8 on the firmness scale (10 being firmest).

All three mattresses do a good job at providing support for your body and the body contouring and hug that can be expected from all foam mattresses, but vary in the degree of comfort and plushness depending on the model.

Gel Foam Bed mattress review

Gel Foam Bed Venus Corner View

With my heavier weight, at 230 lbs, I often have a problem with mattresses providing support for my heavier weight without making me sink down past the mattress comfort layers. This isn’t the case with the Gel Foam Bed mattresses, of which all 3 support my heavier weight quite well.

Kaye doesn’t have this problem, as she weighs half what I do, so it was nice to have a mattress that provided us both with support for our respective body weights.

As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.

The Venus was especially supportive for and comfortable for side sleeping due to the extra foam layers and 14″ thickness. However, the Miranda felt equally comfortable and supportive as well without much difference in feel.

The Triton was still supportive, but at 10″ and without the comfort layers the other models possess, was less comfortable for side sleeping than back or stomach positions.

Comfort

As mentioned above, the different models vary in terms of comfort depending on the thickness and degree of plushness.

The 14″ Venus is extremely comfortable and plush, without feeling too “squishy” or that we sunk into the mattress. The gel infused Serene foam combined with multiple layers of their Eco Flex foam do an excellent job at providing a very comfortable yet supportive sleep environment.

The 12″ Miranda is almost as comfortable as the Venus, absent 2″ of additional foam. It shares most of the features of the Venus but is more medium firmness, as can be expected.

The 10″ Triton was on the firmer side for my tasted, but as mentioned previously, this is because my weight tends to compress through thinner mattresses and come to rest on the underlying support foam which is much more firm. However, this is to be expected for this “Firm” model in the Gel Foam Bed lineup.

All in all, we were very impressed with the degree of comfort and support for mattresses at this price point which rival many much more expensive mattresses.

Sleeping Hot

The Gel Foam Bed mattresses do not sleep hot at all. The gel infused memory foam layer quilted into the cover of the mattresses does an excellent job at keeping the mattresses cool and preventing heat buildup.

We didn’t really feel any noticeable heat buildup or get the common sweaty feeling that some memory foam mattresses tend to cause, which is a good thing for us sharing a bed!

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

The Gel Foam Bed mattresses also do a good job with sinkage and motion transfer.

As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent and plays a big part in how mattresses respond to both my individual and our combined weight.

The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

Gel Foam Bed Venus mattress review

Miranda profile view

The Gel Foam Bed mattresses all do a great job with minimizing sinkage, especially for my heavier weight. Even the 10″ Triton did not cause me to bottom out when sitting near the edge like I do with other mattresses this size which surprised me.

Edge support is about average with this mattress, and about the same as most mattresses we have reviewed. I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges, and didn’t experience much edge compression when sitting on the edge due to my weight.

Motion transfer is good as can be expected for all foam mattresses, which tend to minimize this more than coil or latex mattresses.

Neither Kaye nor myself felt very much disruption in our sleep or shaking of the mattress when each other changed positions or got in or out of bed during the night.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Gel Foam Bed mattresses had an average amount of odor when they were opened, which is normal for all-foam mattresses. It wasn’t excessive or persist for a lengthy period of time, however, which is in the normal range for other mattresses we have reviewed.

Customer Service

Gel Foam Bed provides about the standard amount of customer service you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailer. This includes:

Their is around a week delay between ordering and the mattresses shipping however, which caused longer to receive the mattresses after ordering.

Price

The Gel Foam mattress is priced very reasonably with their highest end Venus model coming in at $749 for a Queen, which is an excellent price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress. The other models are even more reasonably priced as well.

Summary

Gel Foam Bed has done a very good job at introducing a line of comfortable and high quality mattresses without the higher cost compared to other mattresses. Their proprietary gel-infused Serene foam is both comfortable and sleeps cool which is a big bonus for an all foam mattress line.

Mattresses vary in terms of their comfort, with naturally the 14″ Venus being extremely plush and comfortable, with the 12″ Miranda very similar but at a more medium feel. The 10″ Triton shares the core materials and design, albeit at a firmer feel.

All models sleep cool and have moderate amounts of sinkage and motion transfer, and do well for heavier sleepers as well as couples.

All in all, the Gel Foam Bed mattress line is an excellent choice for a new mattress, and very reasonably priced. If you like the feel of memory foam and want a thick, supportive mattress at a great price, check out a Gel Foam Bed mattress today!
