Saatva Mattress, Split King

The Saatva mattress is a popular luxury innerspring model that features an unusual but effective coil-on-coil design to create a supportive and comfortable sleeping surface that gives you the feeling of sleeping on the top of the mattress rather than inside it. Saatva has established themselves as one of the leading names in the mattress industry and as one of the largest online mattress retailers.

One of the great things about Saatva mattresses, including the one that we’ll look at today, is that they don’t arrive to your house compressed in a box!

Hopefully this review will help you decide if the Saatva mattress is the right choice for you!  Review updated Mar 16, 2022 @ 2:14 pm

Is the Saatva Mattress Right for You?

Buy the Saatva mattress if you like:

  • Mattresses for heavier sleepers – The Saatva mattress offers an ideal balance of support and pressure relief and is perfect for heavier sleepers who want to enjoy the cradling and cushioning feel of memory foam without sinking too much into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.
  • Firm but comfortable mattresses good for back pain – The Saatva is perfect for people with back pain who are looking for a firm but comfortable mattress. It features additional layer of memory foam in the lumbar part to provide better support to the lower back and keep the whole spine properly aligned.
  • Durable mattresses – The coil-on-coil design of the Saatva makes it especially stable and supportive, and it also protects it from sagging, while its special Dual Perimeter Edge Support System contributes to this and increases the durability of this mattress.

You might not like the Saatva mattress if:

  • You don’t like the bounce of hybrid mattresses – The Saatva is a foam/coil hybrid that provides more bounce and responsiveness than all foam mattresses. If you don’t like buoyant mattresses, this one may not be the right pick for you.

Construction and Materials in the Saatva

As mentioned, the Saatva mattress is unique in that features a special coil-on-coil design where the lower coil unit provides a connected hourglass-shaped steel support base and is topped with the individually wrapped coil system.

This pocketed coil system is coupled with a luxury Euro pillow top that can only be found in ultra premium mattresses that cost over $2,000 for a queen mattress.

The Saatva mattress is available in a 14.5-inch Premier Luxury and 11.5-inch Custom Slim height. Both options offer the same feel and firmness levels, but only the 11.5-inch version is compatible with an adjustable base which the company has available for sale on their website.

The one we reviewed is 11.5-inch version and it consists of:

  1. Individually wrapped comfort coil layer – This layer is made of individually wrapped coils that provide gentle, but firm support. They are responsive and do a great job of providing support to the parts of your body where it is needed most. They conform to your weight and contour to your body as you lay down while providing some bounce to the mattress so you won’t feel stuck while adjusting your position. They also prevent excessive motion transfer due to their pocketed nature.
  2. Dual perimeter edge support system – The Saatva mattress uses a Dual Perimeter Edge Support System that is a foam encased anti-sag edge support system which makes the mattress more durable, provides more sleep surface and enhances edge support.
  3. Lumbar support enhancement – This layer is made of the highest-quality comfort foam that provides additional pressure relief and serves as a transition from the soft pillow top above to the coils below. The convoluted design of this layer cushions the lower back and reduces stress and tension, and it allows greater airflow through the mattress to enhance cooling.
  4. Steel coil base support system – This layer is made of steel hourglass-shaped support coils meant to prevent sagging, increase the durability of the mattress and provide additional support to the sleeper and the layers above. The tall coil layer creates a lot of space in the mattress which helps with air circulation and cooling. When combined with the pocketed coil layer above, it creates a coil-on-coil structure which makes the mattress more responsive and gives it a nice amount of bounce.
  5. Euro pillow top comfort layer – This layer is made of a plush and luxurious cushioning materials inserted underneath the outer covering for a neater look. This pillow top is very breathable and more convenient than regular pillow tops as it is quilted tghtly into the mattress itself which prevents shifting and provides consistent comfort and extraordinary pressure relief.

The cover of the Saatva mattress is made from soft and breathable 100% organic cotton. It is quilted with foam and connected directly to the mattress to create that Euro pillow top.

The quilting on the Saatva mattress is a bit tighter in the lumbar region due to an additional strip of memory foam meant to improve pressure relief. Besides this, the cotton in this cover is treated with the company’s special Guardin botanical antimicrobial fabric treatment which inhibits bacteria to prolong the life of the organic cotton fabric.

We were quite impressed with the luxuriousness and the quality of this cover, as it is vastly different from ordinary covers seen in most mattresses.

Firmness & Support

The firmness of the Saatva mattress can be customized at the time when you order your mattress, and you can choose between three firmness options: Firm, Luxury Firm, and Plush Soft.

Firm is the hardest of the three, with a feel that falls around an 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale which you can see below and which is given on the company’s website. This firmness option is most suitable for sleepers who prefer sleeping on their backs or stomachs and opt for mattresses with a firmer feel.

The Luxury Firm is slightly firmer than average and falls around a 5 to 6.5 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest). This is considered to be a perfect level of firmness that can equally comfort all types of sleepers and fit all their sleeping styles.

The Plush Soft version is about a 3 which makes it softer than most other mattresses on the market. It best suits side sleepers who like to feel enveloped by their bed.

The one we slept on is the Luxury Firm model, and we felt it to be around a 7 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).

We chose the Luxury Firm model to reduce the sinkage we were experiencing as a couple and prevent Kaye from rolling towards me as my heavy weight (230 lbs) easily compresses mattresses that are too soft.

We needed a mattress that is neither too soft nor too firm as we are primarily side sleepers and prefer a mattress that is soft enough to cradle our hips and shoulders while sleeping on your side.

In addition, we need a bed that has the firmness necessary to provide us with a proper spinal alignment, support my heavy weight with ease and prevent me from sinking all the way down to the very foundation like it is often the case with many softer mattresses. That’s why we chose this model.

This mattress offers medium-firm level of support which makes it suitable for almost every sleeping position. It balances pressure relief and support, making it an easy choice for couples who need to meet in the middle.

When lying down on it, you will feel the initial soft feel of the pillow top before experiencing the cradling and support of the springs beneath. The mattress also responds pretty quickly to the pressure except in the lumbar region where the additional memory foam is stored.

It provides a nice cradling feeling, but there is also a good degree of bounce which makes moving around and getting in and out of the bed easy and eliminates the feeling of being stuck into the mattress.

All in all, we felt that the Saatva mattress ensured optimal sleeping conditions. It distributed our weights evenly across the bed and provided us with the right level of support and comfort necessary for a sound and quality sleep.

How Comfortable Is the Saatva?

The Saatva mattress is extremely comfortable, which you feel as soon as you lay down on the quilted cotton cover and luxury Euro pillow top and the underlying support layers begin to sense your pressure and react accordingly.

It provides a very balanced feel as it offers a nice balance of comfort and support. The firm hourglass-shaped coils combined with the pocketed coil layer above work to keep your spine properly aligned, lift your body and create the feeling of sleeping on the top of a mattress rather than inside it.

The soft pillow top cradles your body, but doesn’t excessively hug it so you won’t feel enveloped by the mattress.

This bed is surprisingly good at relieving pressure when you first lie down, even while the hefty springs support you underneath.

Though the contour with this mattress is not as much pronounced as with a fully foam bed, there’s a good degree of responsiveness and bounce coming from its innerspring nature which makes it ideal for sex.

Airflow between the innerspring system allows greater breathability to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night, and it also promotes cleanliness as such structure prevents the appearance of germs and dust mites.

Sleeping Hot on the Saatva – No!

Sleeping hot is often a factor with many mattresses, especially memory foam mattresses, but this was not the case with the Saatva. Right from the start of our review of this mattress we felt it was cool and did not cause us to wake up sweaty or hot.

There are a few things that make the Saatva sleep cooler than other standard memory foam beds. First of all, the cover that wraps the mattress is made of extremely soft and breathable cotton that wicks away moisture and heat.

This breathability is improved by the first convoluted foam layer designed to increase airflow through the mattress and disperse bodily heat. Finally, there are two layers of coils that promote free circulation of air through the mattress to help keep the mattress cool and create a cool and comfortable sleeping surface.

Although the Saatva mattress doesn’t use any special temperature regulation gel in its construction like the all foam Loom and Leaf, its innerspring design acts as a natural cooling mechanism and prevents the mattress from getting too warm at night.

Sinkage and Motion Transfer

The Saatva mattress does a good job of preventing excessive sinkage, especially when compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent.

The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on most mattresses. My heavy weight causes them to compress down quite a bit when sitting on the edge or upright in bed.

Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight and the fact that she doesn’t compress the mattress down as much as I do.

Sinkage was not a problem with this mattress  as not only its 11.5″ thick construction prevented me from bottoming it out, but the premium layers of foam and the unique coil-on-coil construction did an amazing job at preventing sinkage in the least bit.

When it comes to edge support, the Saatva mattress blows away the competition here due to its Dual Perimeter Edge Support System that provides superior support, prevents sagging and increases the durability of the mattress.

I didn’t compress the mattress much at all when sitting on the edge, and I didn’t experience any of the “rolling off” the edges feeling when sleeping near the edges.

As for the motion transfer, motion transfer with this mattress is more pronounced than in all foam mattresses we have reviewed, but again, this is to be expected due to its innerspring nature which creates more bounce and responsiveness than foam or latex.

However, the use of the luxury Euro pillow top, convoluted foam layer and individually wrapped coils in the upper coil layer limit excessive motion transfer to a large degree.

We didn’t feel much disruption or shaking of the mattress when we got in and out of the bed and when we moved around, which is often the case with these types of mattresses which are more responsive and bouncier due to their innerspring construction.

Smell / Off-Gassing With the Saatva

Off-gassing is non-existent with the Saatva mattress. Off-gassing is a by-product of the chemicals used in the foam that create a sour odor when compressed, put in a bag and a box for shipping purposes and then opened at home.

The Saatva doesn’t have any noticeable smell as the company ships their mattresses uncompressed in their natural form. So, your mattress will be delivered directly to your doorstep and installed by professionals in your home.

They are one of the rare only online mattress companies that do this, and they are committed to a smaller carbon footprint and are members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC). Needless to say, no smelly chemical odor was present with our bed when we received it.

Customer Service

Customer service is something that Saatva prides itself on which is evident during the ordering process.

As the mattresses are made to order and delivered directly to you by truck and professionally installed, you have to first put in your zip code on the site to determine if they offer delivery to your area. As they have so many distribution facilities setup by now, this usually isn’t an issue.

Once you select the size and model of bed (Firm, Luxury Firm or Plush Soft) and place your order, within 24 hours you’ll receive a call confirming it and letting you know the expected delivery date.

The company representatives are extremely friendly and will walk you through the entire process, which for us was around 10 days. The delivery is arranged via a local delivery company who calls you the day before delivery is scheduled and then on the same day within an hour of delivery.

The guys that delivered our bed took away our older mattress, brought in the Saatva mattress, unwrapped and installed it in our room quickly and professionally.

Every person involved was extremely friendly and helpful, and the entire ordering process went super smoothly. High marks in this category.
