Comfort/Firmness

The Hope Original mattress is a universal comfort model designed to appeal to most sleepers, and we felt it to be around a 6 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).

So, if you like mattresses of a medium-firm feel, this one may be the right pick for you. It’s perfect for all sleeping positions and all types of sleepers, including heavier sleepers such as myself.

As soon as you lie down on the Hope Original, you will feel how soft its cover is. It works with the Atlas PR Gel Memory Foam layer to gently cushion your body and provide a cloud-like feel and an amazing pressure relief to those areas of your body where it is needed the most.

This layer, combined with another softer gel-infused memory foam layer below and the layer of highly resilient OrtoFlex Comfort Foam provide incredible comfort and pressure relief and work as transition layers in that they slowly transition your body weight into the firmer core support layer so you don’t feel any kind of discomfort.

They will also provide just the right amount of support needed to keep your spine naturally aligned regardless of your preferred sleeping position.

Sleeper Profile Table

Side Sleepers

The Hope Original mattress is a medium-firm mattress and falls around a 6 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest). This means that it will work perfectly for all side sleepers, including heavier sleepers such as myself (230 lbs).

So, if you are a side sleeper, you won’t need any adjustment period. The mattress offers enough give in the softer top comfort layers to cradle your hips and shoulders and prevent any possibility of the appearance of pressure points.

Kaye found this mattress worked well for her too for this sleeping position, although she generally prefers mattresses with a firmer feel.

Back and Stomach Sleepers

As for back and stomach sleeping position, we felt this mattress worked perfectly for us while sleeping on our backs, but not so well when sleeping on our stomachs, due to its softer feel of the top.

The soft gel-infused memory foam layers on top cradled our bodies and transitioned our weights into the firmer core support layer below and worked with it to provide enough support needed to keep our spines properly aligned when sleeping on our backs.

However, when we turned on our stomachs, I felt it caused me to sink into it quite a bit, especially my hip area, and it threw my spine out of its natural alignment. Kaye didn’t feel the same, but it might be due to her much lighter weight. It worked ok for Kaye for this sleeping position, but not so good for me.

Therefore, the Hope Original mattress might suit some stomach sleepers of a lighter weight, but if you are a heavier sleeper looking for a perfect mattress for this sleeping position, then this mattress may not be an ideal choice for you.

Combo Sleepers

The Hope Original mattress may be a perfect option for you if you share your bed with a partner and you tend to frequently change positions during the night.

It features layers of the Cloud Motion Memory Foam and OrtoFlex Comfort Foam that work together to provide an ideal combination of comfort, support, and cooling, while also reducing the amount of motion transfer, so you can get more of a deep and restful night’s sleep.

They also prevent you from sinking too far down into the mattress and feeling trapped in foam and facilitate changing positions and moving around in bed during the night.

Air Flow/Temperature Control

The Hope Original mattress does an amazing job of sleeping cool due to the use of various cooling technologies in its construction.

Motion Transfer/Isolation

The fact that I weigh around 230 lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress, which is something that my partner Kaye doesn’t experience.

I often tend to compress the top comfort layers of most mattresses quite a bit due to my heavy weight. Kaye, being half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do as her lighter weight doesn’t compress down the bed too much.

The Hope Original does a good job with motion transfer, especially compared to most other all-foam mattresses we have reviewed so far. As we often tend to mention, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight-dependent.

A nice 12″ thick design of the Hope Original mattress combined with various layers of foams did a great job of reducing the amount of sinkage and motion transfer, so we didn’t feel any disruption in our sleep.

Hope Original mattress responsiveness

Although the softer memory foam layers on top of this mattress caused us to compress them quite a bit when sitting upright in bed or sleeping, they didn’t make us sink too far down and feel trapped in foam as is often the case with the lower quality all-foam mattresses.

A firmer core support layer worked with the transition layer to lift my heavy body weight and our combined weights sleeping as a couple with ease and distributed them evenly across the bed.

They also didn’t make our moving around in bed or getting in and out of it difficult in any way, while at the same time they provided good edge support as well.

Edge Support

Regardless of its all-foam construction and the use of the softer foams on top, edge support is pretty good with this mattress and better than with many other all-foam mattresses that we’ve reviewed here.

It is true that I compressed the softer gel-infused memory foam layers quite a bit when I sat or slept near the edges, but the slightly firmer transition layer below and a dense core support layer prevented me from sinking too far down and bottoming out.

So, the Hope Original mattress won’t cause you to roll off the edges and will allow you to use the entire surface of the bed.

Sex

Being made entirely of different types of foam, the Hope Original mattress doesn’t offer too much responsiveness and bounce, which makes it perfect for isolating movements between partners, but which may not be too great for sex.

It is quite comfortable and silent, but if you prefer mattresses with more responsiveness and bounce, then the Hope Original may not be a perfect pick for you.

As for the delivery process, it went pretty smoothly. The company asked for 1-2 days for building and processing our mattress and it arrived after a few days.

We found it easy to handle and unpack. As soon as we opened the box and pulled the mattress out of its plastic package, it started to expand. It didn’t take long for the mattress to regain its original shape, and we didn’t notice any off-gassing smell in the process.
