Construction and Materials

The Awara is an 13″ hybrid made of certified organic latex and premium pocketed coils all wrapped with the highest-quality cover. It consists of the following layers:

  • 4″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 4″ of the all-natural and organic certified Dunlop latex designed to provide durable and yet cool and contouring sleep surface and responsiveness to the mattress.
  • 9″ Bottom Layer – This layer is 9″ of individual support coils that serve as the foundation for the mattress, minimize motion transfer, and ensure full body support and proper spinal alignment. It also features the reinforced edging and a 5 zone pocketed coil system designed to cradle you while sleeping and provide support to those areas of your body where it is needed most.

The cover of the Awara mattress is a quilted super soft organic cotton and natural wool cover, designed to provide a silky smooth feel to the top, allow greater airflow through the mattress, wick away moisture and provide you with a cool and luxurious sleep.

In addition to the organic cover, the Awara mattress has upholstered handles on both sides which helps with moving or rotating the mattress. The handles lie flat to the surface of the mattress so they aren’t visible under the sheets. The overall fit and finish is exceptional and really adds to the luxurious feel of the mattress.

Firmness & Support

The Awara mattress comes in one firmness option, which we rate at a 6.5 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).

It provides a good support from the pocketed coil foundation layer, with the latex top layer that provides more of a sensation of floating on top of the mattress compared to “sinking down in it” like memory foam.

Naturally derived organic latex combined with premium coils perfectly fits your body’s curves and relieves pressure points while providing just the right amount of comfort and support necessary for all types of sleepers and all sleeping positions.

There is a pretty large degree of bounce to the mattress, from the combination of latex and innerspring coils used in the mattress construction.

The Awara uses a quilted pillow top made from silky soft organic cotton and natural wool that adds the extra softness to the mattress and that combined with the latex layer below provides sufficient contour and “give” necessary for sleeping on your side.

This mattress is unlike many other latex mattresses (or latex hybrid mattresses) that are much firmer and not so comfortable for side sleeping as we have found.

Since Kaye and myself are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our backs or stomachs, and the Awara mattress has it all.

It has the right amount of firmness and a 5 zone support system that provides support to those areas of your body where it is needed most and is, therefore, perfect for all sleeping styles and sleepers of different weights.

How Comfortable is the Awara?

The Awara is an extremely comfortable mattress with its super soft organic cotton and wool cover that provides a pleasant and cool sleeping surface and a natural Dunlop latex layer which offers a soft support with a nice degree of bounce and responsiveness-

The combination of Dunlop latex and coil springs both cradle your body and provide pressure relief while they also offer enough firmness and support necessary to keep your spine properly aligned in all sleeping positions and make your night’s sleep more comfortable.

The coil base foundation does a great job at supporting my heavier individual weight (at 230lbs) as well as our combined weight as a couple and works perfectly well with the latex layer to provide a high degree of bounce and responsiveness. This also makes it great for late night couple’s fun and facilitates changing positions and getting in and out of bed during the night.

Sleeping Hot

The Awara mattress sleeps rather cool due to the use of the organic cotton and wool cover, highest-quality latex layer, and pocketed coil layer.

Latex is known for its naturally cooling properties while the organic cotton and wool cover effectively wicks away moisture and works with the pocketed coil layer to allow the air to circulate freely through the mattress and prevent the retention of heat.

The surface of the Awara mattress was cool to the touch during the night and the latex layer below didn’t make us get that sticky sweaty feeling often present with many mattresses using foam in their top comfort layers.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

This all natural mattress does a great job at reducing the amount of sinkage that we experience both individually and as a couple, especially when compared to most all foam mattresses we have reviewed.

As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent, and the fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

Awara mattress profile

The latex and coil construction of the Awara mattress does a good job of providing the support and pushback that minimizes sinkage. I didn’t compress the top latex layer too much and it worked perfectly well with the coil layer below to support my heavy weight with ease and distribute it evenly across the bed.

The responsiveness of the latex layer and coils also prevented me from sinking too deep into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it as it is the case with many other mattresses.

Edge support is also excellent with this mattress. It is true that I compressed the bed to a certain degree when sitting on its edge due to my heavy weight but the quality latex layer and coil layer beneath did a good job of lifting my weight and preventing me from sinking even further and bottoming out.

Also, when sleeping near the edge I did not experience any “rolling off” of the mattress sensation that is commonly a problem with mattresses with inadequate edge support.

Motion transfer is higher than in most other mattresses we have reviewed, but this is to be expected from a hybrid mattress of such construction as the coils and latex provide a pretty large degree of bounce and responsiveness.

Although my heavier weight caused the mattress to bounce a bit when getting in and out of the bed as well as when moving around during the night, Kaye didn’t feel much disruption in her sleep.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Awara mattress gets high marks in this category for not having any noticeable smell. This is a result of its unique construction which does not include any foam, just coils and the Dunlop latex. In addition, its design does not include any harsh chemicals or VOCs that often contribute to chemical smells and off-gassing.

Customer Service

Awara Sleep provides above average customer service offerings which are far better than you can expect from most standard Bed-In-A-Box online mattress retailers. This includes:

Price

The Awara mattress is priced pretty reasonably for a hybrid mattress of such a high quality and construction and it comes in at only $1199 for a Queen. For an all organic, high quality mattress this is a great price and surprisingly lower than expected given the very luxurious materials used.

Twin$899
Twin XL$999

Summary

The Awara mattress is a unique mattress that combines innerspring pocketed coils with a top layer of natural Dunlop latex and a soft organic cotton and wool cover.

This combination provides an ideal balance of comfort and support necessary for all sleeping styles and offers a high degree of bounce and responsiveness which facilitates moving around in bed during the night and makes this mattress perfect for sex.

Besides the use of all-natural and organic materials in the construction of the Awara, which really sets it apart from most other mattresses available on today’s online mattress market, this mattress also features a special 5 zone support system that provides the right amount of support to all those parts of your body where it is needed most.

The fit and finish adds a real luxurious feel to the mattress, from the incredibly soft organic cotton and wool cover to the durable upholstered handles on its sides.

The mattress also sleeps pretty cool due to the use of the latex layer, innerspring coils and breathable cotton and wool cover which is also highly effective in wicking away moisture and keeping you cool and dry all night long.

There was more motion transfer with the Awara due to its unique design which includes the use of latex and innerspring coils, but it was nothing too extreme.

Overall, the Awara combines very high quality organic materials to deliver a supportive yet very comfortable mattress. The mattress does provide good support for heavier sleepers and is a good choice for those looking for the best of both worlds – natural latex and innerspring coils.

We hope our review of the Awara mattress helps you out in your next mattress purchase decision! If you have any questions, feel free to let us know!
