Construction and Materials
The Wright mattress is a 12″ mattress made up of 4 layers of foam.
- 1.5″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 1.5″ of ultra dense 4lb gel-infused visco elastic memory foam. This layer is designed to provide comfort and ensure cooling during sleep. It also is designed to provide support and relieve pressure points.
- 2″ Contour Layer – This layer is 2″ of 3lb memory foam that helps with additional body contouring after the sleeper sinks through the upper comfort layer.
- 1.5″ Support Layer – This layer is 2″ of additional ultra dense 5lb memory foam. This layer is designed to provide support and responsiveness and aids in transitioning motion between the upper and lower layers.
- 6″ Support Layer – This layer is 6″ of 1.8lb base foam that provides support for the mattress as well as deep compression support for the body.
The cover of the the Wright mattress is built from a combination of cotton and polyester, a blend that creates a soft and breathable cover. It has a very nice soft textured pattern and feel to it that is gives the mattress a great feel through your covers.
Firmness & Support
The Wright mattress is available in one universal firmness option which is designed to appeal to a wide variety of sleepers, which we rate at a 7 out of 10 (10 being the firmest). The dense memory foam initially feels firm until your body sinks into it and is contoured via the various layers.
The Wright mattress initially a little firm to me, as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers in .
However after sleeping on the Wright for a few weeks, the mattress softened up more and became much more comfortable and supportive for my 230lb weight and large 6’+ frame.
Kaye felt the Wright was the perfect firmness, by providing the hug and contour of memory foam that she likes, without feeling like she is sinking too far down into the foam and feeling trapped.
In terms of support, we feel the Wright mattress does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions, due to the multiple foam layers providing comfort and support during sleep.
As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.
The Wright felt good on my hips and shoulders and did not cause any numbness or discomfort which I often experience with lower quality mattresses, and which is a big problem.
Comfort
Some memory foam mattresses can be deceiving, in that they initially feels firm and not as cushioned, due to the use of denser, slower-response memory foam. This is a common complaint with Tempur Pedic mattress which feel very firm and not comfortable.
After sleeping on the Wright for an extended amount of time, we found that our bodies adapted to the mattress and molded to the memory foam without feeling stuck or trapped in the foam.
The top comfort layer of the Wright provides enough give and softness which makes it very comfortable, without being too soft and causing you to bottom out to the harder lower support layers.
As mentioned, the dense foam layers in the mattress made it much more comfortable while also providing the support needed for my heavier weight and for both of us sleeping together.
The dense memory foam layers do a good job at supporting our bodies and providing good responsiveness when changing positions during the night.
Sleeping Hot
We are very critical of many all foam mattresses which trap heat and make for a sweaty night as a couple, but the Wright did not cause us to feel any heat or stickiness.
Wright developed a new foam called 3BELOW™. It’s a fully breathable, open-cell material, infused with heat-conductive gel particles. That means it actually draws heat from your body and disperses it throughout the mattress so it escapes more quickly.
According to the company, the W1.27 sleeps three degrees cooler than other foam mattresses, right in the sweet spot for deep, uninterrupted sleep.
For an all-foam mattress, this is an impressive feat and not something many memory foam mattresses can pull off but the Wright does it very well.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
In terms of sinkage and motion transfer, the Wright mattress does an excellent job at minimizing this, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.
Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight. The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.
When we sleep together on the Wright, the mattress isolates our individual weights and doesn’t cause any sinkage towards my heavier weight which is often a problem with poorly constructed foam mattresses.
The Wright does an excellent job at minimizing motion transfer between sleepers due to the classic slow-response memory foam which isolates movement. There was not any excessive movement or shaking between us during the night.
We noticed immediately that any movement by me during the night wasn’t felt by Kaye much at all. I also did not sink down through the mattress and compress it with my weight like often is the case with all foam mattresses.
Edge support is very good with this mattress, and better than most memory foam mattresses we have reviewed.
I slept near the edge at time to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them compressed under my weight. This is due to the dense foam used in the mattress which does a great job at keeping even weight distribution.
Smell / Off-Gassing
This luxury all foam mattress had a minimal amount of off-gassing when taken out of the box and packaging, which is great given the all foam construction which commonly has a degree of odor when taken out of the packaging.
We give the Wright high marks in this area, as many foam mattresses emit significant odor from the chemical compounds that are released when the mattresses are unpackaged.
