Construction and Materials
The Tuft and Needle Mint is a 12″ mattress made of 3 layers of polyurethane foams arranged in gradual firmness to achieve a perfect balance of comfort and support.
- 3″ Top Comfort Layer – The top layer is made of 3″ of T&N Adaptive Foam infused with 30% more graphite than the original mattress which prevents overheating. This layer has a quick response to pressure and enough bounce to facilitate changing positions during the night and is a perfect combination of comfort and pressure relief.
- 2″ Transition Layer – This layer is 2″ of adaptive foam infused with upgraded ceramic gel designed to wick away heat and provide more support for your body. It is slightly firmer than the top comfort layer and serves as a transition from the medium firm comfort layer to the super firm base while providing a cradling support as the body sinks deeper into the mattress.
- 7″ Base Layer – This foundation layer is made of 7″ of high-density poly foam. Although it is super firm, it still uses open-cell technology to make the bed breathable and allow airflow through it. It is the firmest of the three layers and also comes with a reinforced edge support foam to help the mattress keep its shape and increase the sleeping surface of the mattress.
The cover of the Tuft and Needle Mint mattress is a soft knit blend of polyamide and polyester and is incredibly soft to the touch. It is also durable, designed with charcoal and OEKO-TEX® certified. It adds to the overall luxuriousness of this mattress and aids in breathability.
Firmness & Support
The Tuft and Needle Mint is a universal comfort model which means that it is designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers with different sleep preferences. We felt that the MInt was around a 6 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).
As we always preach, firmness is largely weight dependent, and I usually compress the top comfort layers of most mattresses more than Kaye does as I weigh considerably more than she does (230lbs vs. 115).
Although I compressed the soft top comfort layer of the Tuft & Needle Mint mattress to a certain degree, the slightly firmer transition layer and firm base layer lifted my heavy weight with ease and distributed it evenly across the bed.
The mattress offers an incredibly soft feel, but it’s nice 12″ thickness and dense foams in the transition and base layer prevented me from pushing all the way down through it and feeling stuck in foam. Don’t forget to also check out our latest Loom and Leaf mattress review.
The cover, combined with the soft top comfort layer, offers a plushness that hugs your body and allows you to sink into a mattress to a certain degree but not enough to make it difficult to move around in bed or get out of it.
The special foams used in the construction of this mattress are designed to respond quickly and provide enough bounce to facilitate changing positions and getting in and out of bed during the night.
The dense foam layers provide you with the right balance of pressure relief and support during sleep and work well for all types of sleepers and all sleeping styles.
The Mint provides the support necessary for side sleeping, without causing any discomfort in our shoulders and hips that some mattresses often cause and it has enough firmness necessary if you switch to your back or stomach.
The Tuft & Needle Mint is an extremely comfortable mattress. Its adaptive, graphite and gel infused foam layers are designed to provide you with a cool, comfortable and pressure relieving sleeping surface.
The top comfort layer work together with the transition and base layer to keep your spine aligned while cradling your body and preventing any pressure points during sleep.
This model is firm enough to be supportive, and yet has the softness necessary for comfortable sleep. It will make you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud, but it will prevent you from sinking too much into it and feel “trapped in foam”.
The softness of the cover combined with the soft top comfort layer and other layers of dense foams made our nights truly enjoyable and this feeling was shared by both of us.
As mentioned, the Mint has a quick response to pressure and you won’t feel stuck in foam which is typical for most all foam mattresses, particularly mattresses made entirely of memory foam.
It is soft, but also very responsive and there is also enough bounce which facilitates moving around in bed during the night and makes this mattress perfect for sex.
The Tuft & Needle Mint does an excellent job of sleeping cool. The top comfort layer contains 30% more graphite compared to their original mattress which helps disperse excessive body heat.
The mattress also contains and upgraded ceramic gel, which helps wick away heat and prevents its build-up. In addition, a breathable cover of this mattress provides greater airflow and aids in cooling.
All mattress technology combined kept us cool throughout the night and helped eliminate the problem of sleeping hot that we often experience as a couple living in Texas. We didn’t experience excessive sweating and didn’t get that sticky sweaty feel that many all foam mattresses usually tend to cause.
Sinkage and Motion Transfer
Like we often preach, sinkage and motion transfer are highly dependent on sleeper’s weight. As I weigh more than Kaye, I usually tend to compress and sink down into a mattress a lot more than she does, but this was not the case with this mattress.
I compressed its soft top comfort layer to a certain degree, but it didn’t cause me to bottom out and come to rest on the foundation of our bed.
The slightly firmer transition layer and super firm base layer prevented me from sinking all the way down through the mattress, lifted my heavy weight with ease and distributed it evenly across the bed as well as our combined weight as a couple.
Kaye didn’t experienced the same amount of sinkage as I did given that she’s half my weight, and most importantly, she didn’t roll towards me or feel as if she was going to sink into a hole.
This is often a problem with all foam mattresses that have poor support given our weight differential which is why I cause a depression in the mattress which makes her roll into me.
This wasn’t the case with the Mint. The 12″ thickness of the bed combined with its dense foam layers does a good job at preventing excessive sinkage, which earns it high marks in our evaluation of it.
As for motion transfer with this mattress, there is very minimal amount of it coming from a responsive and bouncy nature of the special foams used in the construction of this mattress, but it is nothing too extreme and won’t cause any sleep disturbance.
It is a good choice for couples as it allows you to easily change positions and get in and out of the bed during the night without disturbing your partner.
This excellent all foam mattress offers above-average edge support when compared to other all foam mattresses due to its high-density foam layers and reinforced edge support foam.
I didn’t press all the way down through the mattress when sitting or lying near the edge, and it worked perfectly well for Kaye as well. We also didn’t experience that sensation of “rolling off” the edges.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Tuft and Needle Mint mattress gets high marks in this category for not having too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Any smell that was present came mostly from being compressed during packaging and shipping, but it was nothing overpowering and dissipated pretty quickly.
The Tuft & Needle company is pretty standard when it comes to their warranty and support offerings. Their customer service includes:
- 100-night sleep trial

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress may seem to be a bit higher priced for an all foam mattress, coming in at $1195 for a Queen. But, this is a reasonable price given the premium materials used in its construction and the overall comfort and luxuriousness that it offers.
The Tuft and Needle Mint mattress stands out as one of the better 12″ all foam mattresses on the market today. It is a universal comfort mattress designed to appeal to a wide variety of sleepers with different sleep preferences.
Its special adaptive foam combined with denser transition and base foam layers does a good job at providing balance and pressure relieving support necessary for a comfortable and sound night’s sleep.
The proprietary foams used in the design of this mattress and the special features such as enhanced foam, plush top layer, extra cooling beads, enhanced edge support make this mattress stand out from many other similar mattresses currently present on the online mattress market.
If you’re looking for an all foam mattress that comes with some special technologies, sleeps cool and provides extraordinary pressure relief and support then the Mint may be an ideal choice for you. It is a great mattress worth the value and it is definitely an option worth looking at.
