Is the Novosbed Mattress Right for You?
Buy the Novosbed mattress if you like:
- Mattresses that are good for heavier sleepers – The Novosbed is very good at handling heavier sleepers and the addition of the Comfort + kit really makes the Novosbed even more comfortable and and thicker which is something heavier sleepers are looking for.
- Classic memory foam feel – The Novosbed mattress provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without making you feel trapped in the foam.
- Mattresses that sleep cool – The aerated foam used in the construction of this mattress does a good job at keeping the mattress cool when sleeping.
You might not like the Novosbed mattress if:
- You don’t like that classic memory foam feel – The Novosbed mattress is made entirely of foam which provides that classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour. So, if you don’t like this and prefer more buoyant mattresses, the Novosbed may not be a perfect pick for you.
Construction and Materials
The Novosbed mattress is a 11″ mattress made up of 3 layers of foam. The Novosbed is offered in 3 firmness options, of which we reviewed the Medium firmness model.
- 2″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of ultra dense memory foam. This layer is designed to provide comfort and ensure cooling during sleep. It also is designed to provide support and relieve pressure points. The aerated foam helps to provide airflow and circulation to keep the mattress cool.
- 2″ Support Layer – This layer is 2″ of additional ultra dense memory foam. This layer is designed to provide support and responsiveness and aids in transitioning motion between the upper and lower layers.
- 7″ Support Layer – This layer is 7″ of base foam that provides support for the mattress as well as deep compression support for the body.
When adding the Comfort + top cover to it, the mattress gains another approximately 2″ of height.
The cover of the the Novosbed mattress is made of polyester, silica, modacrylic, and Tencel. It has a very nice soft textured pattern and feel to it that is gives the mattress a great feel through your covers.
The cover has a zippered top which not only allows for removal for cleaning, it also enables the addition of the Comfort + top kit, which adds an additional layer of comfort foam to the mattress and increases the mattress’ overall thickness.
Firmness & Support
The Novosbed mattress is available in multiple firmness options, of which we chose the Medium firmness option, which we rate at a 7 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
The Novosbed mattress initially a little firm to me, as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers in most mattresses.
However, Novosbed shipped a complimentary Comfort + top kit with a soft top layer, which zipped onto the top of the mattress and added to the comfort as well as the overall height.
After sleeping on the Novosbed for about 2 weeks with the Comfort + layer, the mattress softened up more and became much more comfortable and supportive for my 230lb weight and large 6’+ frame.
Kaye felt the Novosbed was the perfect firmness, by providing the hug and contour of memory foam that she likes, without feeling like she is sinking too far down into the foam and feeling trapped. The medium firmness model we received, combined with the softer Comfort + top layer, provided the perfect amount of support plus comfort to the mattress.
In terms of support, we feel the Novosbed mattress does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions. As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.
The addition of the Comfort + layer does an excellent job at providing comfort in the top layer with great support beneath.
The Novosbed felt good on my hips and shoulders and did not cause any numbness or discomfort which I often experience with lower quality mattresses.
The Novosbed is deceiving, in that it initially feels rather firm and not as cushioned, due to the slower-response memory foam. However, after sleeping on it for an extended amount of time, we found that our bodies adapted to the mattress and molded to the memory foam without feeling stuck or trapped in the foam.
As mentioned, the addition of the softer Comfort + layer to the top of the mattress made it much more comfortable while also providing the support needed for my heavier weight and for both of us sleeping together.
The foam does good job at supporting our bodies and providing good responsiveness when changing positions during the night without causing excess motion transfer, at the same time not causing excessive sinkage.
This all foam mattress does a good job at providing a cool sleeping surface via the use of the dense foam layers. We felt a small amount of heat retention from the mattress when sleeping at times, which is common for all foam-constructed mattresses in our experience, but it wasn’t bad.
All in all, the mattress does a very good job at minimizing heat during the night for an all-foam mattress
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Novosbed does an excellent job with sinkage and motion transfer, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.
The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.
The Novosbed does an excellent job at minimizing motion transfer between sleepers due to the classic slow-response memory foam which isolates movement and did not cause excessive movement between us during the night.
We noticed immediately that any movement by me during the night wasn’t felt by Kaye much at all. I also did not sink down through the mattress and compress it with my weight like often is the case with all foam mattresses.
Edge support is very good with this mattress, and better than most memory foam mattresses we have reviewed. I slept near the edge at time to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them compressed under my weight.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Novosbed had a minimal amount of off-gassing when taken out of the box and packaging, which is great given the all foam construction which commonly has a degree of odor when taken out of the packaging.
The odor dissipated within a night and was nothing out of the ordinary compared to many similarly constructed mattresses.
Novosbed provides more than the standard customer service offerings you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailer This includes:
- 120 Night Sleep Trial
- 15 Year Warranty
- Made in America
- Free Shipping
The Novosbed mattress is reasonably priced at $999 for a Queen, which is a good price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress.
The Novosbed mattress is a great all foam mattress that is a nice change from many copycat mattresses we often receive from new companies these days.
The company has been around in the market for a while and knows how to create a premium memory foam mattress that is on par with brands such as Tempur Pedic at a fraction of the cost.
The combination of foam layers used in the design of the Novosbed mattress work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive mattress that is ideal for all sleeping positions. The Novosbed is particularly very good at handling heavier sleepers and isolating motion and minimizing sinkage as well.
The addition of the Comfort + kit really makes the Novosbed even more comfortable and and thicker which is good for heavier sleepers.
The Novosbed mattress provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without feeling trapped in the foam like other all foam mattresses, albeit with a bit of trade-off of less responsiveness from the all foam construction. The aerated foam does a good job at keeping the mattress cool when sleeping, which is very important for foam mattresses.
All in all, the Novosbed is a very solid memory foam mattress that delivers on bringing something new and innovative to the market, and we recommend it for both individuals as well as couples.
