You might not like the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress if:
- You don’t like the bounce and responsiveness of hybrid mattresses – This mattress is a coil/foam hybrid that has a lot of bounce and responsiveness and if you don’t like buoyant mattresses that are likely to cause a little motion transfer, this mattress may not be the best choice for you.
Construction and Materials
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid is a 15″ thick mattress composed of the following layers:
- 2″ High-Performance Cooling Quilted Euro Top – This layer is a premium 2″ quilted euro topper comfort layer designed to gently contour to your body, hug your curves in the right way and provide extraordinary pressure relief. The layer is sewn into the cooling ArcticTex cover made of fibers with high thermal conductivity which draw excess heat from the body to keep you cool and comfortable. This special and innovative layer allows the Evolution mattress to sleep incredibly cool without any harsh chemicals.
- 2″ Cooling Nolah AirFoamICE Layer – This layer is made of 2″ of graphite-infused AirFoamICE designed to accelerate the cooling qualities of the proprietary AirFoam by further drawing away excess heat from the surface and body while maintaining superior pressure relief and comfort.
- 2″ Deep Supportive High-Resilience Foam Layer – This layer is 2″ of high-resilience foam that is stronger and more durable than latex and that provides support and responsiveness and serves as the transition layer between the upper foam layers and the firm pocketed coil system below.
- 8″ Patented HDMax Eco Support Coil and Edge Support System – This layer is 8″ patented tri-zoned support coils that provide 25% more support than traditional spring systems and additional pressure relief and cooling. They are designed to provide maximum back support and keep your spine properly aligned regardless of your sleeping position. The coils are wrapped in the company’s proprietary Edge-Tech support foam designed to strengthen the edges around the mattress.
- 1″ High-Density Orthopedic Support Core Layer – This layer is 1″ of a high-density core support foam that stabilizes the tri-zoned support coils, serves as the foundation for the layers above, and increases the durability of the mattress.
The cover of the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress is the ArcticTex Cooling Cover which is incredibly soft breathable and pleasant to the touch.
As mentioned, it makes the quilted top comfort layer of this mattress and is made of special fibers that have a high thermal conductivity and that draw excess heat from the body to keep you cool and provide you with a comfortable night’s sleep.
There is also a 2″ AirBreath Heat Escape Gusset which goes all around the top edge of the mattress. It is highly breathable and allows the heat to escape quickly leaving you cool and comfortable.
The cover has a pretty nice and modern appearance which contributes to the overall luxuriousness of this mattress.
The Nolah Evolution mattress can be used on any type of bed frame, including box spring, slatted base, platform, foundation, or adjustable bases.
Firmness & Support
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress comes in one universal firmness option designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers with different needs and sleep preferences and we felt it to be around a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
The company has their own firmness scale where they rate this mattress in a range you can see below.
In terms of support, this amazing new hybrid provides excellent support in all sleeping positions. Various layers used in its construction all work together to provide a level of firmness that works perfectly for all sleeping styles and sleepers of different weights, even the heavier ones such as myself.
As soon as you lie down you will feel how soft and smooth to the touch the pillow top is. Combined with the graphite-infused AirFoamICE below, it offers an incredibly soft and gentle feel.
They will allow you to sink into them to a certain degree, cradle your body, and contour to your unique body curves for perfect pressure relief without making you stuck in the foam.
The slightly firmer transition layer beneath the coil system does an excellent job of providing extraordinary support to those areas of your body where it is needed the most.
Zoning technology used in the coil layer makes it provide 25% more support than traditional spring systems while at the same time it provides extraordinary pressure relief and prevents pain and numbness in your hips and shoulders or any other kind of discomfort.
It will keep your spine properly aligned regardless of your preferred sleeping position, lift your body weight with ease and distribute it evenly across the bed.
We primarily side sleepers and we felt this mattress worked perfectly for us. It had just enough give in the top comfort layers to cradle our hips and shoulders and prevent the appearance of pressure points, while it also offered enough firmness needed to keep our spines naturally aligned when sleeping on our stomachs or backs.
So, the high-quality hybrid construction and materials of this mattress offer the amount of support that a heavy sleeper such as myself needs while it has enough softness and pressure-relieving comfort that both Kaye and myself prefer as a couple sharing a mattress.
Comfort
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid is a rather comfortable mattress with its amazing 15″ thick design and a perfect combination of various foams and a durable coil system.
As soon as we lay down we felt how comfortable it was. Its top comfort layers gently cradled our hips and shoulders to prevent the appearance of pressure points and slowly transitioned our weight with the help of a high-resilience foam into a firmer coil system below.
The durable zoned coil system did a great job at keeping our spines properly aligned regardless of the position we chose to sleep in and provided just the right amount of support to those areas of our body where we needed it most.
So, we can say that the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress provides an ideal balance of pressure-relieving comfort and support and works perfectly for all sleeping styles and all types of sleepers, including heavier sleepers such as myself.
In addition, there is also enough bounce and responsiveness with this mattress coming from its pocketed coil system and the layer of high-resilience foam that is stronger and more durable than latex.
This makes the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress perfect for sex and also facilitates moving around in bed and getting in and out of it during the night.
Sleeping Hot
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress sleeps incredibly cool due to the use of various cooling technologies in its construction.
The top comfort layer is sewn into the special ArcticTex cover made of fibers with high thermal conductivity designed to draw excess heat from the body and keep things cool and comfortable all night long.
Beneath this top comfort layer, there is the 2″ Cooling Nolah AirFoamICE layer made of graphite-infused foam designed to accelerate the cooling qualities of the proprietary AirFoam by further drawing away excess heat from the surface and body.
The mattress also features an AirBreath Heat Escape Gusset which goes all around the top edge of the mattress. It is highly breathable and works with the pocketed coil system to increase airflow through the mattress and allow the heat to escape quickly leaving you cool and comfortable.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress did a great job of minimizing the amount of sinkage and motion transfer.
As we always tend to mention, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weigh considerably more than Kaye (230 lbs vs 115), tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.
I compress through the top comfort layers more than Kaye does and often come to rest on the firmer support layers in most hybrids which are usually hard and not so comfortable.
However, this was not the case with the Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress. It is true that I compressed the top comfort layers of this mattress quite a bit, but the slightly firmer transition layer of high-resilience foam and the firm pocketed coil system below prevented me from sinking even further into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.
The nice 15″ thickness of this mattress and various layers of foam and pocketed coils used in its construction all worked together to lift my heavy bodyweight and our combined weights sleeping as a couple with ease and distributing them evenly across the bed. It also didn’t cause Kaye to “roll down into me” because of our weight difference.
Edge support is also great with this mattress and better than with many other beds we have reviewed so far due to the proprietary Edge-Tech support foam that goes all around the mattress and that is designed to strengthen the edges around the mattress.
We sat at the edges at times to test this and we didn’t feel they compressed too much under our weight. They also didn’t cause that well-known feel of “rolling off” the edges when sleeping near them.
Motion transfer was more present with the Evolution than with the previous two all-foam Nolah mattresses, but this is to be expected due to its hybrid design and the use of pocketed coils in its construction. However, this was nothing too serious and didn’t interfere with our sleep.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Nolah Evolution Hybrid mattress gets high marks in this category for not having too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Its hybrid design significantly reduced the amount of of-gassing and any smell that was present dissipated within a few hours.
