Mattress Construction and Materials

It is a 11″ all foam mattress made up of 4 layers of various foams.

  • 1″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 1″ of quilted foam that is sewn into the cover that is designed to improve airflow and and relieve pressure points, while providing softness and a luxurious feel to the top, and it also provides pain relief.
  • 1″ Support Layer – This layer is 1″ of 4lb patented Lush Foam semi-open fast-recovery gel memory foam, which provides primary support and aids in cooling and comfort.
  • 3″ Transition Layer – This layer is 3″ of 3lb medical grade cooling gel embedded foam that acts as a transitional support layer between the upper and lower layers and also aids in cooling.
  • 6″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 6″ of high density foam that acts as the foundation and provides deep compression support.

The cover is made up of soft, long staple cotton that includes Tencel – a fabric more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk, and cooler than linen.

It is naturally bed bug resistant and actually circulates air throughout the upper layer to improve airflow and circulation.

The exterior of this bed is extremely soft and luxurious feeling, something we normally see only in mattresses costing 3-4x the cost of this one.

The cover can be replaced by the company after sleeping on it over time, at no charge – which is something we have never heard a company doing.

Nectar’s Firmness & Support

The Nectar mattress only comes in one firmness option which we rate it at a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).

It feels like more of medium – firm mattress, in that the top comfort layer provides a soft, luxurious feel with the underlying support layers providing firmer support below.

With many mattresses, since I am a heavier sleeper, I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers which are often harder and not as comfortable.

This isn’t the case with the Nectar, as I don’t immediately compress through the comfort layers and come to rest on base support layers.

Both Kaye and myself felt this bed initially was on the firmer side of the spectrum, but quite comfortable due to the upper comfort layers and the luxurious cover materials.  Over time, however, it breaks in and adapts to your body and becomes less firm and rather comfortable.

The Nectar Sleep mattress provides a good degree of support for a heavier sleeper like myself from the denser foam foundation layers combined with the top comfort layers.  In fact, the dense foam core of this mattress is one of the best out of all the beds we have tested, which is important for providing that deep compression support for the body.

We felt Nectar does a great job of providing support in all sleeping positions for both Kaye and myself sleeping as a couple.

As we are primarily side sleepers, we like beds that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomach or back.

The Nectar definitely provides the support we need for back and stomach sleeping, and surprisingly also provided a comfortable, supportive side sleeping environment which I was initially surprised that it would.

I usually prefer much softer top layers, often choosing softer memory foam layers that hug and mold to my hips and shoulders, but the luxurious comfort layer in this mattress does a really great job at giving that same feeling.

The Most Comfortable Bed

The Nectar mattress is quite comfortable, with the sumptuous top layer with the Tencel cover material providing a soft and supple sleeping environment, while the various foam layers below work to support and contour the body during sleep.

The layers of gel foam and adaptive foam provide the response needed to switch positions during the night and support my heavy bodyweight with ease, without causing too much movement during the night for Kaye when I get up or move around.

Nectar Mattress Cover Closeup

The Nectar is also great for late night amorous couple’s activity as well (um.. SEX!), with the bed providing good push-back and bounce needed, without experiencing that sinking down into a hole feel that traditional memory foam feels like.

This bed is both very supportive as well as being very comfortable, and the premium materials all lend themselves to accomplishing this.

Sleeping Hot

The Nectar does a good job of not sleeping hot due to the various gel-infused foam layers and the quilted foam within the cover that aids in air circulation.

As a couple who has tested over 75 different mattresses, this is a big deal for us and something that the Nectar does a great job at – preventing body heat buildup or causing sweating during the night.

Taken together, all of this technology does a great job of keeping this mattress quite cool. We did not experience the sticky feeling that we often do with foam mattresses in the least bit which was something we really were thankful for.

Mattress Sinkage & Motion Transfer

Motion isolation or transfer is how effective a mattress is at localizing or absorbing movement. Good motion isolation is great for couples to avoid waking each other up during tossing, turning or getting out of bed.

Some couples may not like zero transfer for such activities as sexual intercourse. Memory foam has really good energy-absorbing properties and generally the thicker or more dense it is the better.

Necar does a good job with minimizing sinkage, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.

The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.

Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

I don’t sink down much at all when sitting on the Nectar, due to the high quality dense foam layers, which is impressive given that my heavier weight often causes me to “bottom out” when sitting on many models on the market.

Edge support is very good with this bed, and better than with many mattresses we have reviewed. The high density foams used in the construction do a good job at providing even support throughout the mattress, including the edge.

I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them become compressed under my weight.

Motion transfer was also excellent (minimal!) due to the all-foam construction, which is known to offer superior reduction in motion transfer between sleepers moving during the night.

This is often a big issue for us, when my heavier 230lb body moves or gets out of the bed and wakes Kaye up during the night (who as a result is often not happy!)

Kaye felt no disruption in her sleep when we changed positions during the night which made for happy sleeping for both of us 😉

Smell / Off-Gassing

Memory foam mattresses usually have the highest ratings for comfort, durability, and customer satisfaction. One of the only complaints owners have is about memory foam smell.

Luckily, Nectar Sleep gets high marks in this category for creating a mattress that doesn’t have too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box.

There was markedly less off-gassing and odor that foam mattresses usually have, which was rather surprising to us given the all foam construction.  Any smell that was there dissipated quickly within 24 hours.

Nectar’s Customer Service

Nectar really shines in the customer service department, by offering some options that are above and beyond what other manufacturers offer such as:

Price

The Nectar mattress is our top rated mattress, and for a good reason – it is extremely reasonably priced, coming in at $700 for a Queen (after applying the MFT125 coupon), which is a great price given the quality materials and construction used.

Twin XL$550

Nectar Mattress Review – Wrap up

The Nectar Sleep mattress is a great bed that combines multiple layers of high quality foam with a soft and extremely comfortable pillow-top cover.

The premium materials and excellent craftsmanship make it a luxury mattress that can compete with other beds costing much more, and one that surpasses many of these higher priced models.

If you’re looking for a good medium-firm feel and excellent support for all sleeping styles, albeit at a bit firmer feel, the Nectar is the right choice for you. The use of the multiple layers of high quality, dense foam makes it have less motion transfer, sleep cool, and have good edge support which is a great feature for couples that share a bed.

The Nectar is a good choice for those that like the hug and contour of foam without feeling “stuck in a hole” like some foam models do, and that is a common complaint for people sleeping on memory foam – and certainly us!

We feel that the team behind Nectar really got things right and has created a luxury foam mattress that delivers excellent support combined with extremely comfortable materials, at a price that can’t be beat.

If you are looking for a luxury model, you can’t go wrong choosing a Nectar mattress, which we really enjoy and highly recommend as our top rated choice in our Top 10 Best Mattresses Guide

We hope this review of the Nectar Sleep mattress helps in your next purchase decision and be sure to check out all our latest reviews.

On our 3rd mattress, in just a couple yrs, has done the same thing.. we are back to back side sleepers… If we turn to spoon there’s a lump in the center, so bad that I end up supporting myself from tipping.. Does the nectar form right away so that doesn’t happen?

    Reply
    • Andrew

Yes, it is pretty good about not leaving any lumps or indentions. We have slept on ours over a year, and haven’t had any of those issues. That is something that Kaye hates (rolling into my heavy body since I weigh twice what she does..) and we don’t have those issues with the Nectar.

Thanks! If you have any other questions feel free to let us know!

I am interested in how long it took for you to receive your mattress? I have read it ships from China, and some customers have had trouble with shipment delays like we have with clothing orders from China or other items. It seems to take weeks to get items from overseas. The mattress looks so comfortable, but that is the one thing troubling me (shipment and delivery frustrations and any other challenges related when dealing with overseas situations).

    • Andrew

      Hi,
No it doesn’t ship from China. It ships from America, they have had some delays in the past due to overwhelming demand. It is quite comfortable, and what we personally sleep on. Don’t believe all the hype you read – they have had some issues in the past with shipping, but have caught up recently.
      Hope that helps,

My husband and I are considering the Nectar mattress. We are both side sleepers, although I sometimes sleep on my back, and we are currently sleeping on a very old, lumpy innerspring mattress. I’m experiencing terrible pain in both my hips upon awakening and want to make sure whatever replacement mattress we buy does not aggravate these pressure points. I weigh about 145 and am 6′ tall, so I don’t have a lot of “meat on my bones.” My husband is about 195 pounds.
Is the Nectar a good choice got someone like me/us?

    • Andrew

      Hi there,

Well first of ANY improvement over what you are sleeping on will be a great one. That bed is sagging and causing misalignment of your spine and hips etc.. which clearly you feel. Just replacing your existing innerspring one will make a big difference. Now that being said, we like the Nectar a lot – in that we have it as our primary bed in our rotation in between testing other ones. It has a good firm core which helps keep your spine in alignment, but with a soft pillowtop feel for the comfort layer. It will be a great bed for you I feel, and with your combined side/back sleeping should be just the right firmness.

      Hope that helps!

How does this Nectar mattress compare to a Sleep by Number bed? I currently own a sleep by number bed. I have had my bed for 10 yrs, looking to update. The new Sleep by number ones are so expensive.

    Reply
    • Andrew

Well, we have not tested a Sleep Number bed. We are familiar with them, and the air-bed type design that lets you dial in the firmness will be something different compared to a Nectar, where you get just one firmness option. So if you’re used to a specific firmness, or have a partner that you have different settings for each side, that will not be possible with the Nectar. Sorry we just don’t have specific experience testing a Sleep Number, although we plan to see if we can get one to test…

I think Nectar is a great mattress because it’s soft, it helps circulate air and wick away heat while you sleep, and it’s bedbug resistant. Which is what I need. I haven’t read about other mattresses being like this one or close to it that’s what makes this one so great besides the features.

Have you tried out the Puffy or Puffy Lux mattress? I’m looking at the nectar and the puffy lux since it sits 12′ tall. If you had to choose between the puffy or nectar to be the only bed you will forever sleep on, which would you choose and why. Thanks!

    • Andrew

      Hey there,
Well we have not tried the Lux yet.. but yes we have reviewed the Puffy. They are both great, we would go with the Nectar personally, but it is a hard choice as they are both very good beds. The original puffy is only 10″ high and causes a little sinkage for heavier sleepers, which the Nectar does not – and i’m a heavy sleeper 😉 The Lux does look like a good option to prevent that however.

      Hope that helps!

I weigh 240 and my husband 230. I have premature arthritis in my lower back along with sciatica and was told that i should sleep on my stomach. So i currently sleep on my back or on my side. But my husband sleeps on his stomach. I bought a mattress about 3 years ago and i feel like it’s already sagging and hurting my back even more. We are planning on getting pregnant so i def need a new mattress. Would u say this mattress would be a good choice for us? We are both heavy weighted and hot sleepers as well. Money isn’t a problem i just want something that isn’t going to sag and support our weight.

    Reply
    • Andrew

Well it won’t sag that’s for sure. The dense foam core in this bed is on par with memory foam mattresses costing much more. I’m 240 lbs give or take and don’t cause sagging and don’t “bottom out” when sitting on the bed, like I do for some thinner cheaper mattresses. It is on the firmer side, which is what you want if you’re heavier than average. One that is too soft will break down further over time and cause you all kind of back and hip pain due to spine misalignment. Great thing about Nectar is you can try it for 365 nights and see what you think- if you don’t like it, get your money back! Tempur pedic is also a great bed, and for heavier / pregnancy – just around $6000 for a comparable one to this one and no sleep guarantee like this.

I have had a temper pedic for about 13 years now. I have terrible fibromyalgia and in tge past year or so have been having terrible pain while trying to sleep. My neck and area between my shoulder blades is hurting so bad it wakes me up along with my lower back. I also find that i am having that “sunk in” feeling and i get terribly hot in bed. My bed is 13 years old and maybe the newer ones are made different or better but i would not spend thousands of dollars on another temperpedic again! I am ready to try something new!

        Reply
        • Andrew

You need a new mattress for sure. 13 years is past the usable life of a mattress, which is around 8-10. The sinkage you’re experiencing won’t happen with any new mattress. If you’re hurting that bad, I recommend you replace your mattress asap. A good thing about a mattress such as the Nectar is that you can get a new mattress at a fraction of the price of a Tempur Pedic, and really close if not better than their quality. Plus they have an excellent sleep trial and warranty. If you have those medical conditions you’re only making them worse by waiting to replace it!!! Let us know what else we can help with, you shouldn’t have to wake up in pain!!

I’m struggling to decide which of the million online mattresses to get. It doesn’t help to know that all of the mattress review sites are affiliates and so even though they SAY they’re unbiased, they actually may be, at least a little. Nectar sounds good, but my bf is pushing 300lbs and I want to make sure my purchase will be comfortable and long lasting for us both. How does this mattress hold up long term? And with sagging issues?

    Reply

Well given we are an affiliate site, hard to reply to that statement. We aren’t biased towards any company other than the fact we rank Nectar #1 and personally sleep on it, which is why we like it so much. We weigh a combined 350 lbs and don’t have an issue lying next to each other and sinking.. had it for a year, so all we can say is during that time no issues. You have 365 nights to test it and if you don’t like it, get your money back. So worth a try..

I believe if you read the fine print they cover certain amounts of sinkage – like 1″ or something that if it doesn’t correct will be covered. I suggest reading their fine print on the warranty. As they have a “lifetime warranty” – i’m sure they have certain conditions that have to be met…

My biggest concern about buying a nectar is whether you sink down into it and have trouble moving to another position. It didn’t appear that way by watching the video. I can’t stand the feeling I’ve had when I’ve laid on a memory foam and feel like I can’t move or rolled over. I’m in debate between getting the nectar or the dream cloud mattress.

    Reply
    • Andrew

That is a common feature for softer memory foam mattresses. The “Trapped in foam” feeling. You won’t get this with the Nectar. If you watched the video you would see that that doesn’t happen to me – and I’m 235 lbs. Many other softer beds will do that, and it is really a hassle. For sure, the Dreamcloud hybrid will be firmer and have much more responsiveness and less hug and contour than the Nectar, but even so – it isn’t that pronounced with the Nectar as it uses a very dense foam core which will prevent sinkage.

  35. Victoria J Bryant

Is the mattress in the video on a Nectar boxspring? I notice the mattress has some sort of plastic clips on the edges. I like the look of the Nectar boxspring, but my bed is made like the one in the video and I need to fit the boxspring inside of it.

    Reply
    • Andrew

No, it is on a Saatva Lineal adjustable base. Those clips hold the mattress in place when it is raised and lowered so it doesn’t slide off. You can use any foundation / box spring. If its a king size, you will want 2 twin XL foundations that you put a king mattress on top of. That adjustable base we use allows us to raise or lower the mattress.. If you have a bed like us, any regular foundation will work.. but we really like the adjustable beds like the one we have. Google “Saatva Lineal Base” to check it out.

It seems a couple of reviews say they are your current/favorite but it’s hard to tell from the dates. I am interested in the nectar or dreamcloud. which one is your current fav?

    Reply
    • Andrew

Yes, well we review so many that we get some at the time we feel are our favorites then another comes along! We rank Nectar #1 out of all the beds we have tested, and DreamCloud #2. So that’s pretty much saying something. They are different feels – an all foam mattress (Nectar) which provides more body hug and contour, and a hybrid (DC) which has more core support and a little firmer. We sleep on both in between testing beds as we have a 3br house and have both those in 2 different rooms. I prefer the feeling of memory foam personally, and Kaye likes firmer beds like the DC. So that’s the biggest difference. You can’t go wrong with either, but depends on your preference. Do you like that feeling of “sleeping on top of” your bed? Or “sleeping down in?” that’s the difference between foam and hybrid coil beds. Some people like different things, its so subjective.

After reading this post, I think Nectar is a great mattress because of the support it offers. That’s what I look for in a mattress for myself!

Will there ever be a chance that Nector will move on and create a softer mattress? I tend to be a stomach sleeper and side.

Good question. I brought this up to their CEO and he stated that there is “one best mattress” – and why they don’t offer multiple firmness options. Have you tried the Nectar? It isn’t as firm as you think – I am a side sleeper and it is great for me, and I get numbness in my arms and shoulders when sleeping on beds that are too firm. It is perfect for me, and if you are a stomach sleeper you want a bed that is firmer, not too soft as it will cause you to have back pain. Give it a shot, you can’t go wrong with their sleep trial. Hope that helps!

I am impressed with the cooling gel feature since our mattress is so hot. Do you use a mattress pad on the Nectar or does it affect the cooling gel?

We do not use a mattress pad, for that very reason – they tend to make mattresses hotter by getting in the way of any cooling layers. As a rule, most mattress protectors aren’t as breatheable or allow you to feel the underlying comfort layers as well. The great thing about the Nectar is they will provide you with a new cover if you need it – if yours gets dirty or whatnot! Something most companies don’t do.

I had a spring mattress that actually injured me by trapping then damaging a nerve on a pressure point from a spring. It’s a freak thing (and the mattress was old) but I woke up with most of my foot and back of calf numb and it’s been 7 months and it’s still painful (damaged the Achilles because of walking on numb foot) and a little bit numb. I definitely recommend memory foam mattresses and this one looks like one of the best 😀

I really love everything I read about the Nectar – it really ticks all the boxes we need. It sounds like it has enough support (I prefer medium firm, plus like you both, we have a size differential as well with my SO being much bigger & heavier than me). I also love that it sleeps cool & is great at minimizing motion transfer. The Forever Warranty & 365 sleep trial are huge pluses as well!

It does have some features that other companies have since copied, such as the 365 night sleep trial, forever warranty, etc.. Excellent value and excellent bed!

I can’t think of any point touched on concerning the Nectar Mattresses that wasn’t covered well. I would be very satisfied with a supportive, cool-sleeping Nectar Mattress! The firm factor is also I huge selling point for me!

Right now I sleep on a hospital bed mattress. I have muscular dystrophy and suffer tremendously at night. I am on disability so I wondered if you have any discount? Need help.

You can get $125 off the Nectar using our code MFT125.. so a queen is around $690 which is a great price. You really need a new bed, no matter what you choose, as it really is only going to make you feel worse. Look at it as an investment. I believe Nectar also offers financing for their mattresses as well, so you don’t have to pay all at once. Check out http://www.nectarsleep.com for more information
