Molecule 2 Mattress Review
In this review we take a look at another amazing Molecule mattress that’s basically an updated version of Molecule’s flagship mattress no longer available for sale.
Unlike the Molecule 1, this one is a firmer Air-Engineered memory foam mattress featuring 5 conforming zones that provide an equal amount of support to different body areas.
Just like the Molecule 1, this mattress stimulates faster recovery by providing the right balance of comfort and support and some extraordinary cooling features.
It is composed of highly breathable foams and is perfect for those looking for a mattress that offers that classic memory foam feel, but does not retain heat like traditional memory foam mattresses.

Construction and Materials
The Molecule 2 is a 12″ all foam mattress made up of 3 layers of various foams:
- 2″ Top comfort layer – This layer is 2″ of MOLECULARFLO extreme open cell memory foam designed to provide durability to the mattress and maximize airflow through it, provide cooling and stimulate faster muscle recovery. This proprietary foam is similar to memory foam but it is open-cell and allows greater airflow through the mattress and is effective in cooling even when compressed totally by your body weight.
- 3″ Response layer – This layer is a 5-zone dynamic response layer made of the proprietary RECOVERYFLO foam and designed to provide the right amount of support to those areas of your body where it is needed most. It is composed of series of hexagon and diamond shaped zones that adapt and conform to the unique curves of your body, promote airflow and aid in cooling. This layer features varying hexagon zone density around the head and the legs to support upper and lower body and larger hexagon zones in the center for additional support and pressure relief in the lumbar region.
- 7″ Base layer – This layer is 7″ of firm but breathable CONTOURFLO foam that acts as the foundation for the layers above, helps the mattress retain its shape and extends its lifetime. It also provides good support for a healthy spine alignment, further promotes airflow and helps dissipate excessive body heat.
The cover of the Molecule 2 mattress is, just like the cover of the Molecule 1, made of the advanced hypoallergenic material that dynamically responds as the temperature of your body changes throughout the night and effectively regulates microclimate between your body and the sleep surface, wicks moisture and dissipates heat to keep you cool and comfortable.
It is breathable, soft to the touch and extremely comfortable and adds to the overall luxurious feel of this mattress.
Firmness & Support
Just like the Molecule 1, the Molecule 2 is a universal comfort type all foam mattress designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers and we felt it to be a medium firm mattress, falling somewhere around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).
As soon as you lay down on this mattress, you will feel how soft and comfortable the top comfort layer is. It will hug and mold to your body to relieve pressure points and provide you with a could-like feel, while the firmer transition layer below will prevent you from sinking further into the mattress and feeling enveloped by foam.
Transition layer, combined with the firm base layer give a mattress a somewhat firmer feel and they work perfectly together to provide the right amount of support to those areas of your body where it is needed and keep your spine properly aligned.
The top comfort layer was really pleasant and soft to the touch and responded slowly to pressure thus providing nice body contouring just like the top comfort layer of the Molecule 1.
It is true that I quickly compressed this layer when sitting or lying on it, but the firmer 5-zone transition layer below and a firm base layer prevented me from sinking too much into the mattress, lifted my body weight and distributed it evenly across the bed as well as our combined weights as a couple.
All this makes the Molecule 2 mattress ideal for back and side sleepers, while stomach sleepers may need a firmer support. We are primarily side sleepers and we felt this mattress to be perfect for this sleeping position.
The soft foam in the top comfort layer gently cradled our hips and shoulders and provided excellent pressure relief, while the firmer zoned layer below and a firm base layer worked together to provide just the right amount of support needed to keep our spines properly aligned when we switched to our back and to stop us from sinking too much into the mattress and feeling trapped in foam.
The Molecule 2 is an extremely comfortable mattress that offers a perfect balance of comfort and support.
It will provide you with that classic memory foam feel of hugging and contour, but it won’t make you feel stuck in foam and it won’t make your moving around in bed and getting in and out of it during the night too difficult.
Its plush top comfort layer will provide you with amazing comfort and pressure relief, while its zoned-support layer and firm base layer below will provide enough firmness and support to those parts of your body where it is needed most.
Just like the exterior of the Molecule 1, the exterior of this mattress is very soft and comfortable, and works perfectly with the soft top comfort layer to providing a comfortable and pressure relieving sleeping surface.
The Molecule 2 mattress sleeps quite cool due to its unique design which promotes greater airflow through the mattress and cooling.
It is Air-Engineered and the various foams used in the construction of this mattress are open cell and designed to promote breathability and airflow, prevent the build up of excessive body heat and keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.
In addition, the cover of the Molecule 2 is designed to dynamically respond as the temperature of your body changes throughout the night and regulate microclimate between your body and the sleep surface, wick away moisture and dissipate heat.
It works well with the open cell foams to manage temperature and moisture and help you stay dry and cool even if you are prone to overheating and sweating during the night.
We didn’t feel any discomfort when sleeping on this mattress and we didn’t experience that sticky sweaty feel that most all foam mattresses tend to cause, which was something we really were grateful for.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are highly dependent on sleeper’s weight and as I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, I tend to sink a lot more into the mattress when sitting up or on the edge than Kaye does.
In case of this mattress, I quickly compressed its soft top comfort layer and felt more of the firmer foams below which prevented me from sinking further down into the mattress and bottoming out.
The nice 12″ thickness of this mattress combined with the zoned support layer and firm base layer did a great job of lifting my heavy weight and our combined weights as a couple and distributed them evenly across the bed.
Edge support was very good with this mattress as I didn’t compress the edges too much when sitting or lying near them and I also didn’t experience any “rolling off” the edges sensation.
The mattress also didn’t cause Kaye to roll into me and feel as if she was going to sink into a hole due to our weight disparity.
As for motion transfer, there is almost no motion transfer with the Molecule 2. We could easily change positions and move around in bed during the night without disturbing each other’s sleep.
Smell / Off-Gassing
Just like the previous Molecule mattress that we have recently reviewed, the Molecule 2 had a slight off-gassing smell when we unboxed it, which was again to be expected given the all foam construction of this mattress and the fact that it comes tightly compressed and packed into a plastic package.
However, this was nothing too serious and all the smell that was present quickly dissipated within only a few hours.
Molecule provides pretty much the standard amount of customer service offerings you can expect from a “Bed-In-A-Box” online mattress retailer. This includes:
- 100-night Trial Period
- Infinity Warranty
- Free Shipping
- Click here and save money on a Molecule 2!
- 100% money back guarantee for Returns / Refunds
The Molecule 2 is priced a bit higher than the Molecule 1, coming in at $1499 for a Queen, but this is quite a reasonable price given the unique design of this mattress and the quality of materials used in its construction.
Overall, the Molecule 2 mattress is a great all foam mattress designed to suit the needs of most sleepers, particularly the needs of those who lead an active lifestyle.
It provides an ideal balance of comfort and support and will be a good choice for you if you prefer sleeping on your side or your back.
Its soft top comfort layer will gently mold to your hips and shoulders for a perfect pressure relief, while the firmer zoned support layer below and a firm base layer will work together to provide just the right amount of support to those areas of your body where it is needed most.
The mattress offers that classic memory foam feel and hug, but it won’t cause you to sink too much into the foam and feel trapped in it. The firmer layers will facilitate moving around in bed during the night, provide your body with a nice lift and distribute your body weight evenly across the bed.
Besides this, the Molecule 2 sleeps incredibly cool due to its Air-Engineered, open cell foams that allow greater airflow through the mattress and its soft and breathable cover that dynamically responds to changes in your body temperature, prevents the build-up of excessive body heat and wicks away moisture to keep you cool, dry and comfortable throughout the night.
All in all, the Molecule 2 mattress is one of the better all foam mattresses available out there and we hope that our review helps you in your next mattress purchase.
