Construction and Materials

The Molecule is a 12″ all-foam mattress made up of 3 layers of various foams:

  • 2″ Top comfort layer – This layer is 2″ of RESTOREFLO open-cell memory foam designed to provide cooling and stimulate faster muscle recovery. This proprietary foam is similar to memory foam but it is open-cell allows greater airflow through the mattress and is effective in cooling even when compressed totally by your body weight. It is infused with gel microbeads that manage temperature and moisture, responds slowly to pressure, allows deep body contouring, and provides cozy support.
  • 3″ Response layer – This layer is 3″ of RECOVERYFLO 3-zone dynamic response layer with a precision-contoured 3D geometric surface that provides targeted, self-adjusting support for different parts of your body. It is made of a series of hexagon and diamond-shaped zones that adapt and conform to the unique curves of your body, promote airflow, and aid in cooling. Smaller zones are around the feet and head and they offer a softer feel while the larger hexagon zones in the center are designed to provide greater support and pressure relief in the lumbar region.
  • 7″ Base layer – This layer is 7″ of firm but breathable CONTOURFLO foam that acts as the foundation for the layers above, helps the mattress retain its shape, and extends its lifetime. It also provides good support for a healthy spine alignment, further promotes airflow, and helps dissipate excess body heat.

The cover of the Molecule mattress is made of the advanced hypoallergenic material with Microban treatment that dynamically responds as the temperature of your body changes throughout the night and effectively regulates microclimate between your body and the sleep surface, wicks moisture, and dissipates heat to keep the things cool and comfortable.

It is breathable, soft, and extremely comfortable and adds to the overall luxurious feel of this mattress.

Firmness & Support

The Molecule 1 mattress is a universal comfort type all-foam mattress designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers and we felt it to be a medium soft mattress, coming in around a 5/6 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).

The mattress has a very soft top comfort layer, then a firmer transition layer and a firm base layer beneath which work together to give the mattress a somewhat softer feel. Kaye felt it to be a little firmer than I did, but as we always tend to mention, firmness is largely weight dependent and I compressed the top comfort layer more than Kaye did since I weight considerably more than she does (230 lbs vs.115 lbs).

For me personally, Molecule 1 is on the softer side as my heavy weight quickly pushed through the soft top comfort layer and compressed it quite a bit. My weight was fairly distributed when lying on the mattress, but when I sat up in the bed, I compressed the top comfort layer and felt more of the firmer transition and base layers below.

The top foam layer was soft to the touch and responded slowly to the pressure which as the result had some nice body contouring. There is not a lot of bounce to this mattress which makes you likely to sink down through the top comfort layer quite a bit. This makes the Molecule mattress ideal for side sleepers while stomach and back sleepers may need firmer support.

We are primarily side sleepers and we felt this mattress to be perfect for this position. The soft foam on the top molded to our shoulders and hips and provided us with a nice pressure relief while the firmer support and base layers below supported our bodies and prevented us from sinking all the way down through the mattress.

As a heavier sleeper, I felt more of these firmer layers as I pressed through the soft upper layer, but they were quite comfortable and did not cause numbness or stiffness in my hips and shoulders or any other discomfort.

Comfort

The Molecule 1 is a rather comfortable mattress although it’s more on the softer side as mentioned. Its plush top offers incredible comfort and pressure relief while its zoned-support layer and the firm base layer below have enough firmness and provide support to those parts of your body where it is needed most.

The exterior of Molecule 1 is very soft and comfortable, and the top comfort layer does a good job of providing a comfortable sleeping surface.

The softness of the cover combined with the initial soft response from the upper foam layer made for a comfortable night’s sleep and this was shared by both of us.

Furthermore, this mattress is Air-Engineered and designed to be highly breathable in order to promote better temperature regulation. Its layers are made of special open-cell foams with air channels for increased breathability and airflow which helps the mattress stay cool while you sleep.

Sleeping Hot

The Molecule 1 mattress is very effective when it comes to temperature regulation and heat dissipation. As we have already mentioned, it is Air-Engineered and has a large number of other features that promote better heat regulation and cooling.

The various open-cell foams used in the construction of this mattress are specially designed to promote greater breathability and airflow, prevent the build-up of excessive body heat and keep you cool and comfortable all night long.

In addition, the cover of the Molecule is also designed to wick away both heat and moisture and it works perfectly with the gel microbeads in the top comfort layer to manage temperature and moisture and help you stay dry and cool even if you are prone to overheating and sweating during the night.

We did not feel any discomfort or stickiness that is often the case with all-foam mattresses, and this was something we really were thankful for.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are highly dependent on sleepers’ weight. I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, and I tend to sink a lot more into the mattress when sitting up or on the edge.

This was particularly true of the Molecule 1 mattress. I quickly compressed the soft top comfort layer and felt more of the firmer foams below which prevented me from sinking further down into the mattress and bottoming out. However, when lying flat on the bed during the night, the mattress did a good job of supporting my body evenly.

Kaye did not experience the same amount of sinkage as she weighs half of what I do. The nice 12″ thickness of this mattress combined with the firmer foam layers did a good job of distributing our weights evenly across the bed and did not cause that common phenomenon of her “sinking in a hole” or rolling towards me.

Edge support when sitting near the edge wasn’t the greatest with the Molecule 1 which was again due to my heavy weight (230 lbs).

As for motion transfer, there wasn’t too much of it when I adjusted positions during the night given the fact that it’s an all-foam mattress which as a rule always does well with minimizing motion transfer.

All in all, the Molecule 1 mattress does a fairly good job with sinkage and motion transfer, on par or better than many other 10″ all-foam mattresses.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Molecule 1 mattress had a slight off-gassing smell when we unboxed it, which was above average when compared to the other mattresses we have reviewed.

This is to be expected given its all foam construction and the fact that it comes tightly compressed and packed into a plastic package. However, there is no need to be concerned as this smell is normal and non-toxic and will dissipate within a few hours.

Summary

All in all the Molecule 1 mattress is a great mattress designed for those who lead an active lifestyle and who are looking for a comfortable all-foam mattress that sleeps incredibly cool.

It can be a good fit for you if you prefer sleeping on your side as its top comfort layer will perfectly mold to your shoulders and hips and allow you to sink into the foam to a certain degree to prevent the appearance of pressure points while the firmer support and base layers bellow will work to provide you with the right amount of support and keep your spine properly aligned.

The mattress offers that classic memory foam feel and hug and yet it won’t cause you to sink too deep into foam and feel enveloped by it. It doesn’t make moving around in bed difficult and doesn’t cause sweating and the feeling of stickiness usually present with many memory foam mattresses.

A soft and breathable cover works perfectly with the breathable open-cell foams to prevent the build-up of heat and keep the things cool all night long so you can get some quality night’s sleep.

The Molecule 1 mattress is a high-quality all-foam mattress that delivers on its promises. We hope that our Molecule 1 mattress review helped you evaluate this great mattress!
