Construction and Materials

The Lytton Serene Comfort Plush is a 12″ coil and foam hybrid mattress composed of the following layers:

  • 1″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 1″ gel memory foam pillow top designed to provide pressure relief, contouring support and help ensure cooling during sleep.
  • 3″ Transition Layer – This layer is 3″ of proprietary Serene foam that is a more natural alternative to memory foam. It is designed to provide responsive comfort and support for the body. It aids in cooling and offers more responsiveness than memory foam, while reducing motion transfer.
  • 8″ Support Layer – This layer is 8″ of Quantum Edge Pocketed Coils designed to provide support for the mattress and deep compression support for the body during sleep. Reinforced coils around the edge provide better edge support as well.

The cover of the Lytton Serene Comfort Plush mattress is made of the finest organic cotton. It is beautifully hand-tufted and makes an extremely plush Euro-top that gives you the feel of sleeping on clouds.

The cover is also highly breathable; it allows greater airflow through the mattress and aids in cooling.

One of the best things about the Lytton Serene mattress is that it is compatible with all types of foundations and bases including slated bed frames, solid platforms, box springs, and adjustable bases.

Firmness and Support

The Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush is the premium gel memory foam and pocketed coil hybrid mattress and we rate it at a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).

The company has their own firmness scale and they rate the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush mattress a little softer, in a range that you can see below.

The mattress feels a little on the softer side to me as I am significantly heavier than Kaye and tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the bouncier coils in the mattress.

In terms of support, the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush mattress does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions.

As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle our shoulders and hips, while also having enough firmness needed to keep our spines properly aligned if we switch to our stomachs and backs and the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush has it all.

The incredibly soft top comfort layers cushioned my shoulders and hips and prevented the appearance of pressure points. They allowed me to sink into them quite a bit and offered great pressure relief, but they didn’t make me feel stuck in foam or feel any discomfort from the pocketed coils beneath.

So, the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush is soft enough to be incredibly comfortable but still supportive enough to prevent me form sinking too too far down in the mattress, causing hip or shoulder pain which some softer mattresses tend to do.

The coil construction, gel memory foam and Serene foam layers provide a high degree of bounce and responsiveness and work well with the 12″ thick design of this mattress to support heavier sleepers like myself.

Comfort

The Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush is a rather comfortable mattress with its Euro-top, plush foams and Quantum Edge pocketed coil support system. Its premium materials and design really set it apart from most other mattresses we have tested so far.

The tufted plush Euro-top provides a really comfortable sleeping surface, and the top comfort layer of gel memory foam combined with the proprietary Serene foam provides excellent pressure relief and comfort.

The mattress will hug your body an cushion your hips and shoulders to eliminate any possibility of the appearance of pressure points while it will also provide enough support where it is needed most and prevent any discomfort or joint pain.

The foam layers of this mattress work well with the pocketed coil system to provide an ideal balance of comfort and support in all sleeping positions and a high degree of bounce and responsiveness which facilitate moving around in bed and changing positions during the night and make this mattress an excellent choice for couples and their late night entertainment (sex).

Sleeping Hot

Another great thing about the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush mattress is that it sleeps really cool due to the use of a highly breathable cotton cover, gel memory foam, cooling Serene foam and pocketed coil system which all work together to improve the airflow through the mattress, prevent the build up of excessive body heat and keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

We did not experience that sticky sweaty feeling that some foam mattresses tend to cause. The mattress slept quite cool due to the layers of gel memory foam, cooling Serene foam, pocketed coils, and breathable organic cotton cover, and this is a big deal for us as a couple living in Texas.

Sinkage and Motion Transfer

The Lytton Serene mattress does a good job of reducing the amount of sinkage and motion transfer.

As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weight around 230 lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage due to her much lighter weight.

There was an average amount of sinkage with this mattress as my heavier weight compressed the plush top comfort layers quite a bit, but the pocketed coil system below prevented me from sinking even further into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it. The soft foam layers cushioned my body and I didn’t feel any discomfort from the pocketed coils beneath.

Edge support wasn’t too bad, due to the reinforced Quantum Edge pocketed coils which provide more stability to the mattress. It is true that I compressed the edges to a certain degree when I sitting or lying near them, but, it was nothing too extreme and I didn’t experience any “rolling off” the edges sensation.

As for motion transfer, the construction of the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush, with its plush foams and micro coil construction, doesn’t cause too much motion transfer at all when moving around in bed or getting in and out of it during the night, so you don’t have to fear that you will disturb the sleep of your partner.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush mattress gets high marks in this category for not having too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box.

Most foam mattresses experience some degree of off-gassing and odor from being compressed and packaged in plastic for shipping, but the Lytton Serene differs from most in this regard by not having very much at all.

Customer Service

Lytton Sleep provides pretty much the standard customer service offerings that you can expect from a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailer. This includes the following:

Summary

All in all, the Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush mattress is a great mattress and one of the most comfortable we have slept on so far. If you are looking for the comfort and luxuriousness that can be found only in expensive hotel beds, then the Lytton Serene: Comfort plush might be the right pick for you.

The comfort and support provided by the mattress’ design is amazing. The plush foams used in the top comfort layer combined with the soft hand-tufted cover provide an extremely cozy and comfortable sleeping surface which will hug and cushion to your body to relieve pressure points.

They work perfectly well with the pocketed coil system below to provide excellent support to those areas of your body where it is needed the most, keep your spine properly aligned, and make any your sleeping position comfortable and pain free.

There is also a nice degree of responsiveness and bounce to the mattress without too much motion transfer, provided by the pocketed coil system which facilitates moving around in bed during the night and makes this mattress excellent for the late night adult entertainment.

The Lytton Serene: Comfort Plush also sleeps rather cool due to its hybrid design and the use of gel foam, cooling Serene foam, and the soft and breathable cotton cover.

We feel the Lytton Serene is one of the better hybrid mattresses available on today’s online mattress market and we hope our review of this mattress helps you out in your next mattress purchase decision!
