Construction and Materials
The Luft is a 12″ all foam mattress made up of 3 layers.
- 2″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of quilted foam embedded with cooling gel that is designed to improve airflow and and aid in cooling the mattress.
- 2″ Support Layer – This layer is 2″ of 3lb open cell memory foam that works to provide support and pressure relief as well as aid in transition to the lower support layer.
- 8″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 8″ of 1.8lb high density support foam that helps provide the core support for the mattress as as well as the foundation for the mattress.
The cover of the Luft mattress has gel-infused foam embedded in it, which helps with cooling and breathability. The cover has a nice pattern on it that looks and good and the foam quilted within it which aids in comfort and airflow.
Firmness & Support
The Luft foam mattress only comes in one firmness option, which we rate it at a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
Usually, with many thinner foam mattresses, I tend to push through the top comfort layers with my heavier weight and come to rest on the underlying support layers, which often are uncomfortable and make the mattress feel a lot firmer.
However, with the Luft mattress, the high density 3lb foam layer in the top support layer does a great job at preventing this and providing enough support and comfort for my heavy weight.
The 12″ thickness does help support both my heavier 230lb weight and combined weight with Kaye, and is a big difference compared to many competing 10″ foam mattresses on the market today.
In terms of support, for us this bed does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions.
As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomach or back. Poorly designed foam mattresses often cause me hip and shoulder pain, which the Luft mattress prevents by using high density foam in the upper layers.
The Luft bed is quite comfortable, with the foam mattress top layers providing good body contour and hug along with cooling and comfort, and at the same time providing the support a heavier sleeper such as myself needs.
After sleeping on the Luft Mattress for a while, we found that our bodies adapted to the mattress and molded to the memory foam without feeling stuck or trapped in the foam.
The Luft foam mattress, like its sibling the Luft Hybrid mattress, is both very supportive and comfortable, and the high quality materials and craftsmanship do a great job at helping provide a comfortable nights sleep.
Even at only 3 layers, the high density foam layers used do a good job at providing a comfortable mattress for all sleeping positions and for couples as well.
This mattress does a good job of not sleeping hot due to the gel infused foam layers in the mattress which makes a big difference not sleeping hot compared to many all foam mattresses.
For us, living in Texas, this is a big factor in evaluating mattresses, and the Luft does a great job at pulling off preventing heat buildup and promoting a cool sleeping environment.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Luft mattress does an good job with sinkage, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.
The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.
Edge support is good with this mattress, about average compared to other foam mattresses we have reviewed. The Luft being at 12″ makes edge support better than most competing 10″ mattresses, but doesn’t have any specific edge support technology compared to its sister mattress, the Luft Hybrid.
Motion transfer is on average about on par compared to most all foam mattresses we have reviewed, which is less than hybrid coil or late mattresses. The all foam construction prevents motion transfer which is a good feature and something we look forward to when sharing a bed as a couple.
Kaye felt little disruption in our sleep when we changed positions or got in or out of bed during the night which for us is a big thing (her waking up due to my constant in and out of the bed has caused problems in the past!) . This is a good thing and something we have found to expect with all foam mattresses.
Smell / Off-Gassing
This bed gets high marks in this category for not having a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Compared to most all foam construction mattresses, there was a much more minimized degree of off-gassing that all foam mattresses usually have.

|Size||Foam Price||Hybrid Price|
The Luft mattress is a great 12″ all foam mattress that provides all the favorable qualities of memory foam mattresses in a comfortable and supportive mattress at a great price.
The Luft foam bed provides a good medium firmness mattress with good support for all sleeping styles, with a lower degree of bounce and responsiveness compared to mattresses with a coil hybrid design. The makes the mattress have less motion transfer, although often makes it sleep just a tad warmer than a hybrid such as the Luft Hybrid.
The Luft still sleeps cool, however, due to the use of the gel foam layer in the top cover. It provides good edge support and minimal motion transfer and sinkage, due to its high density foam layers and 12″ thick construction.
All in all, the Luft is an excellent all foam mattress for sleepers looking for the traditional feel of body hug and contour that memory foam provides, at a very affordable price.
We hope that our review of the Luft mattress helps you out in your next mattress purchase and let us know if you have any questions!
