Is the Leesa Original Mattress Right for You?
Buy the Leesa Original mattress if you like:
- Medium-firm mattresses – The Leesa Original mattress scores 6 on a firmness scale (10 being the firmest) which places it on a medium-firm side side. It will provide you with pressure point relief and a good balance of support and comfort necessary for all sleeping positions.
- Memory foam feel – This mattress is an all foam mattress that will provide you with deep compression support, contouring and the hugging feeling typical for memory foam mattresses, but it will not cause you to sink too much and feel trapped in foam.
- Mattresses with no motion transfer – The Leesa Original is an all foam mattress that causes no motion transfer at all which makes it perfect for restless sleepers and couples who share a bed.
You might not like the Leesa Original mattress if:
- You don’t like the classic memory foam feel – If you don’t like all foam mattresses and that classic memory foam feel of hugging and contour then this mattress may not be the best choice for you.
Construction and Materials
The Leesa Original mattress is a 10″ all foam mattress that combines premium foams for extraordinary cooling, contouring and pressure-relieving support. It is composed of the following layers:
- 2″ Cooling Foam Top Layer – The top layer is 2″ of the special cooling foam, designed to provide both hug of a classic memory foam and enough bounce which facilitates moving around in bed and prevents you from feeling stuck in foam. The special structure of this foam also allows greater airflow through the mattress and aids in cooling.
- 2″ Contouring Memory Foam Layer – This layer is made up of 2″ of contouring memory foam designed to support the body and provide pressure relief and proper spinal alignment.
- 6″ Core Support Foam Base Layer – This layer is 6″ of dense support foam that serves as the foundation for the layers above and works with them to provide excellent support for all types of sleepers and all sleeping positions.
The Leesa Original has a seamless gray, twill fabric cover that is extremely soft to the touch. The cover is really beautiful and highly-breathable.
It works to provide a cool sleeping surface that is pleasant to the touch and increase the overall comfort and luxuriousness of this mattress.
Firmness & Support
The Leesa Original is a universal comfort type memory foam mattress, designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers. We felt it to be a medium-firm mattress and would say it’s around a 6 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest).
The company has their own firmness scale and they rate this mattress in a range you can see below.
As we always mention, firmness is largely weight dependent, and I as a heavier sleeper usually tend to compress the top comfort layers of most all foam mattresses and feel more of the support and base layers below which are often firmer and not so comfortable.
However, this wasn’t the case with the Leesa Original mattress. It is true that I compressed the softer top layers of this mattress more than Kaye did since I weigh considerably more than she does (230lbs vs. 115), but I didn’t sink too much into the mattress and feel the firmer core support layer below or any other kind of discomfort.
The mattress also allowed me to easily move around in bed and change positions during the night and it didn’t make me feel trapped in foam or cause Kaye to roll into me due to our weight disparity and her well-known feel of “sinking into a hole”.
In terms of support, the Leesa Original provides excellent support in all sleeping positions and for all types of sleepers.
It has just enough give in the top comfort layer to cushion our hips and shoulders and prevent the appearance of pressure points while it also offers a great amount of support necessary to keep our spines properly aligned if we switch to our stomachs or backs.
We are primarily side sleepers and we felt this mattress worked perfectly for us. It lifted my heavy body weight and our combined weights sleeping as a couple with ease and provided us with just the right amount of support needed to keep our spines naturally aligned.
It also had enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle our hips and shoulders and eliminate stiffness or any other kind of pain or discomfort.
The Leesa Original has everything that is necessary to provide you with a comfortable night’s sleep.
The top comfort cooling foam layer is soft enough to mold to your body, which is something we especially like about this mattress.
It offers incredible pressure relief to prevent the appearance of pressure points and dead arm sensation while it’s at the same time supportive enough to keep your spine properly aligned regardless of your the position you sleep in.
This special foam layer offers a nice amount of bounce and reacts to your movements almost instantaneously. This means that it will quickly readjust to your new sleeping position as your move around in your bed during the night and provide the right amount of support to those areas of your body where it is needed most.
Besides this, the Leesa Original mattress is also designed to be highly breathable in order to promote better temperature regulation and help you stay cool while you sleep.
The Leesa Original does an excellent job of sleeping cool due to the special materials used in its construction.
The top comfort layer made of the special cooling foam combined with the soft breathable cover prevents the build-up of excessive body heat, eliminates any discomfort and the feeling of stickiness usually present with many all foam mattresses and provides you with a cool and comfortable night’s sleep.
Sinkage and Motion Transfer
In terms of sinkage and motion transfer, again with many of these mattresses it is highly dependent on sleeper’s weight. As I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, I tend to sink a lot more into the mattress when sitting up or on the edge.
However, this was not the case with the Leesa Original mattress. It does an excellent job of minimizing the amount of sinkage and it did not cause me to bottom out and feel enveloped by a mattress.
While I compressed the top comfort layer to a certain degree, the special foam used in this layer worked perfectly with the memory foam layer below and the firmer base layer below to prevent me from sinking all the way down through the mattress and bottoming out.
Kaye didn’t experienced the same amount of sinkage as I did given that she’s half my weight, and most importantly, she didn’t roll towards me or feel as if she was going to sink into a hole.
The mattress provided us with a nice lift and supported my heavy weight and our weights combined with ease and distributed them evenly across the bed.
Edge support is also good with this mattress. I didn’t press all the way down through the mattress and come to rest on the foundation of our bed when sitting on or near its edge, and it worked perfectly well for Kaye as well. We also didn’t experience any feeling of sliding and rolling off the bed.
As for motion transfer, there is almost no motion transfer with this mattress due to its all foam construction which isolates movements between partners to the least bit.
Smell / Off-Gassing
There was a small degree of off-gassing / smell coming from the Leesa Original mattress, but it was but nothing overpowering when compared to some other all foam mattresses we have reviewed. Therefore, we give this mattress above-average marks in this category.
Leesa is pretty standard when it comes to their customer service offerings. Most mattresses in this category share about the same offerings in terms of sleep trials and warranty, and Leesa is no exception here.

The Leesa Original mattress is extremely reasonably priced, coming in at only $849 for a Queen. This is an excellent value given the highest-quality materials used in the construction of this mattress and its overall comfort.
The Leesa Original mattress took the company’s already popular bed and made it even better and more appealing to a wide variety of sleepers with its medium-firm feel and a perfect balance of comfort and support.
Its unique design combined with the special foams used in its construction does a good job of providing extraordinary pressure relieving support as well as a comfortable night’s sleep.
It contours to every curve of your body to make you feel like you’re floating on air while at the same time it quickly responds and adapts to pressure and provides support to those areas of your body where it is needed most.
It is unlike any other 10″ all foam mattress currently present on the online mattress market; it sleeps fairly cool, and does an excellent job of minimizing the amount of sinkage and motion transfer.
It made our nights truly enjoyable and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality, comfortable mattress at a great price.
