Hyphen mattress review
Looking for a new all foam mattress? Our Hyphen mattress review details all the great features of this recent entrant into the online memory foam mattress space.

Hyphen may be a new mattress line, but the parent company, Diamond Mattress, has been around for over 80 years and knows a thing or two about how to construct a great mattress.

Hyphen Mattress, Queen Size
Built in the USA at their own factory, the Hyphen is different than most bed-in-a-box companies in that they manufacture their own product, don’t outsource it.
The result? A better mattress at a better price. Read on for more information about our experience with the Hyphen mattress! (Review updated
)Construction and Materials
The Hyphen mattress is a 10″ all foam mattress made up of 3 layers of foam and featuring the company’s custom formulated Hyphen Foam. Hyphen foam is designed to provide the best of both worlds of latex and memory foam by contouring the body as well as providing bounce and responsiveness during sleep.
- 2″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of 3.5lb custom Hyphen Foam mentioned above, and provides the contour and responsiveness as well as cooling.
- 2″ Middle Support Layer – This layer is 2″ of 2.0lb buoyant transition foam to provide support and pressure relief, as well as provide a transition between the top comfort and lower support layers.
- 6″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 6″ of 1.8lb base foam that provides support for the mattress as well as deep compression support for the body.

Hyphen Mattress Layers
The cover of the Hyphen mattress is made up of a blend of polyester and spandex which gives it a nice soft feel and also provides breathability. We especially like the feel of the cover of the Hyphen.

A few other items not offered by many other bed-in-a-box mattress companies that Hyphen incorporates in its mattress are antimicrobial protection in both the cover and Hyphen Foam as well as advanced cooling features that will be discussed below.
Firmness & Support
The Hyphen mattress is a universal comfort mattress, and only comes in one firmness option, which we rate it at a 5-6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
The Hyphen mattress feels a lot softer to me, as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, at around 230 lbs, and I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers in most mattresses.
This is common, however, with most mattresses for me, but I don’t feel like I am “bottoming out” when pressing through the top comfort layers like I have with other 10″ universal firmness mattresses.
In terms of support, for me the Hyphen mattress does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions. As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.
Comfort
The Hyphen mattress is a very comfortable mattress. We are partial to it as we are big fans of memory foam mattresses for the hug and contour they usually offer but that some mattresses don’t get right.

Corner close-up of the Hyphen mattress
The custom Hyphen Foam does a great job of providing the contour and body hug that we like of traditional memory foam, but without the “stuck” feeling that often happens with all foam mattresses. The responsiveness of the Hyphen Foam makes adjusting positions easy during the night.
Sleeping Hot
The Hyphen Mattress sleeps very cool compared to most all foam mattresses. Diamond Mattress incorporates a variety of features to pull this off with the design of the Hyphen:
- Open cell foam for breathability.
- The ventilated Hyphen Foam top layer.
- Infused copper – while we aren’t normally a sucker for the snake oil claims that copper is supposed to do, it does seem to help in keeping this mattress cool.
- Dual-point phase change. A fancy name for absorbing heat if you’re hot, and transferring heat back to you if you’re cool.
The Hyphen does a great job at not sleeping hot, which is often a problem for us as a couple with some traditional foam mattresses. Much better than most that we have tried by far.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Hyphen mattress does a good job with sinkage and motion transfer, although at 10″ it does have its limitations just due to the overall thickness.
As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent. The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.
Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

Hyphen Mattress Side View
Edge support was not the best with the Hyphen, as it sank to a pretty large degree when I sat on the edge. However, I am pretty large guy and this tends to happen to mattresses that aren’t super dense or super thick.
There wasn’t a huge degree of motion transfer due for us as a couple, as the Hyphen Foam does a good job at minimizing this. Neither Kaye nor myself felt any big disruption in our sleep or shaking of the mattress when each other changed positions or got in or out of bed during the night.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Hyphen gets high marks in this category for not having a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Most all foam mattresses we have encountered tend to have a decent degree of smell and off-gassing but the Hyphen did not.
Customer Service
Hyphen provides better than the standard amount of customer service you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailers, with a 20 year warranty and very friendly customer support. This includes:
- 100 Night Sleep Trial
- 20 Year Warranty
- Made in America at their own factory.
- Save $200 with code SAVE200
- Free Shipping
Price
The Hyphen is priced more reasonably than most mattresses we have tested for all the features they offer. Coming in at $950 for a Queen, which is actually $750 with if you click here and enter the SAVE200 promo codewhich is a good price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress.

Summary
The Hyphen mattress is a great all foam mattress and one of our favorite foam mattresses that we have reviewed.
The materials, construction and the design of the Hyphen all work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive mattress that is ideal for all sleeping positions as well as for couples.
The Hyphen provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without feeling trapped in the foam like other all foam mattresses, albeit with a bit of sinkage and less edge support for heavier sleepers due to its 10″ design.
We are very impressed with the quality offered for the price of the Hyphen mattress and highly recommend it. Hopefully this Hyphen mattress review will be helpful in your next mattress purchase.
