Construction and Materials
The Helix Plus is a 13″ hybrid mattress made up of pocketed coils and foams of different densities and it consists of the following layers.
- Comfort Layer – This layer is made of ultra dense Memory Plus Foam which is a special extra durable Helix blend designed to accommodate higher weight and contour to your body and provide pressure relief.
- Comfort Layer – This layer is made of Helix Dynamic Foam which is the company’s special latex-foam hybrid alternative designed to be denser and provide medium firm feel and better contour to your body.
- Transition Layer – This layer is made of a firm memory foam designed to provide ergonomic support, contour and cushioning to your body and serve as a transition layer between the foam layers above and firmer coils bellow. It also allows a seamless progression of your body weight into the mattress.
- Body Shape Layer – This layer is made of individually-wrapped XL innerspring coils designed to cradle and support heavier weight and limit excessive motion transfer, while reinforced steel coils provide excellent edge support.
- Base Layer – This layer is made of DuraDense high density support foam that serves as the foundation and support for the mattress and increases its durability and stability.
The cover of the Helix Plus mattress is extremely soft and comes with the Ultra Breathable Tencel technology that allows greater airflow through the mattress and aids in cooling.
It increases the overall comfort of this mattress and allows greater airflow through the mattress to keep you cool throughout the night.
Firmness & Support
The Helix Plus mattress comes in only one firmness option and we felt it to be around a 6.5 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest). The company has their own firmness scale on their site where they rate it in a range you can see below.
This mattress may feel a bit firmer to the sleepers of the lighter weight as it is specially built to suit the needs of heavier sleepers. However, it has an incredibly soft top comfort layer made of the Memory Plus Foam that contours to your body and cushions your shoulders and hips to provide you with the necessary comfort and pressure relief.
The top comfort layers will aid in muscle recovery and react quickly to your body shape and any change in your sleeping position due to the latex-foam hybrid structure of the second comfort layer. They also allowed me to sink into the mattress to a certain degree without making me feel trapped in foam.
In addition, the mattress has an additional layer of high-density foam designed for heavier weights that worked perfectly with the other foam layers and pocketed coil layer and supported my heavy weight with ease.
It provided excellent support for all sleeping positions, especially side sleeping. It had enough give in the top comfort layers to cradle my hips and shoulders and prevent the appearance of pressure points while it also had enough firmness necessary for back sleeping.
As Kaye generally prefers firmer mattresses than I do, and weighs almost half my weight, she felt this mattress to be of perfect firmness.
Just like the previous Helix models we have reviewed, the Helix Plus did a great job of meeting our firmness and support needs and provided us with what each of us enjoy in the same bed.
With the taller 13″ construction and an extra layer and other higher density materials specially designed to meet the needs of heavier people, this mattress provides just the right amount of comfort and support necessary for a quality and restorative night’s sleep.
The top comfort layers made of the Memory Plus Foam and Helix Dynamic Foam offer a nice soft feel to the top and create the right pressure relief and contour for your body.
These layers combined with the somewhat firmer transition layer and pocketed coils beneath cradled and supported my body and provided me with the perfect balance of comfort and support.
The Helix Plus also has enough responsiveness and bounce coming from its latex-foam hybrid layer and pocketed coils which, when combined with the other foams of different densities, not only prevent you from sinking too deep into the mattress and feeling stuck in it, but also facilitate moving around in bed during the night and make late night adult activities quite enjoyable.
The Helix Plus mattress does an excellent job of sleeping cool due to the use of latex-like foam on top and unique pocketed coil layer that allows the air to circulate freely through the mattress and prevent the build up of heat.
Besides this, the Helix Plus, like other Helix mattresses, has a special cover featuring Ultra Breathable Tencel technology which increases airflow through the mattress and keeps the surface of your bed cool and pleasant at night.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Helix Plus mattress does a good job of minimizing the amount of sinkage and motion transfer, especially compared to most mattresses we have reviewed.
As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress, something that my partner Kaye doesn’t experience.
I compressed the softer top comfort layers of this mattress quite a bit, but the denser and firmer transition layer below combined with the pocketed coil layer did an excellent job of supporting my heavy weight and distributing it evenly across the bed. They lifted my body and prevented me from sinking too much into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.
This mattress provided me more with the feeling of sleeping on the top of it rather than inside and Kaye felt it did the same for her and perfectly supported her lighter weight.
The mattress also prevented her from rolling into me which is often the case with lower quality mattresses due to our weight differences. She also didn’t experience the common feel of “sinking into a hole” which resulted in peaceful and truly enjoyable nights for both.
Edge support is excellent with this mattress due to the quality wrapped coils used in its construction that not only cradle your body but also feature a reinforced perimeter to provide extraordinary edge support.
It is true that I compressed its top comfort layers to a certain degree when when sitting and lying near the edge, but the firmer and denser transition layer, as well as the pocketed coil layer, supported my heavy weight with ease and prevented me from bottoming out. We also didn’t experience any rolling off the edges sensation.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Helix Plus mattress gets high marks in this category for not having much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Its hybrid design significantly reduced the amount of of-gassing and any smell that was present dissipated within a few hours.

The Helix Plus mattress comes in at $1449 for a Queen. For a mattress of such a unique construction and highest-quality materials, this is quite a reasonable price.
The Helix Plus that has been recently released by one of the leading online mattress companies is a premium mattress specially designed to meet the needs of heavier people. It is a truly unique mattress and unlike any other mattress currently present on the online mattress market.
If you are a heavier sleeper and you are looking for a comfortable and supportive mattress that will be cozy and breathable and still provide a great support in all sleeping positions, then the Helix Plus may be an excellent choice for you.
The Memory Plus Foam and Helix Dynamic Foam used in the top comfort layers really offer a soft and cushionly feel and great pressure relief while the denser and somewhat firmer transition layer below aid in this and work together with the pocketed coil layer to provide extraordinary support.
Besides this, the Helix Plus has a nice degree of bounce and responsiveness coming from its Dynamic Foam and pocketed coil layers which makes changing of positions and moving around in bed during the night easier and makes this mattress a perfect one for sex.
In addition, this mattress sleeps incredibly cool which is great for heavier sleepers who tend to overheat at night.
