Helix Plus Mattress Review

In this review we take a look at the Helix Plus, another great mattress from the new line of Helix mattresses that have recently been released.

The Helix Plus is a 12″ hybrid, specially designed to suit the needs of heavier sleepers. It combines pocketed coils with the highest-quality foams to create a pressure relieving and supportive surface and provide heavier sleepers with extraordinary sleeping experience.

What makes this bed special is the fact that, just like the previous Helix mattresses that we have reviewed, this one is not the usual “universal comfort” one-size-fits-all models like most Bed-In-A-Box mattresses these days. Helix Sleep customizes it based on your individual sleep needs and preferences.

Helix Plus Mattress Review

The company does this by utilizing an online questionnaire to customize the design and construction of your new bed, so you will get a personalized mattress that meets your own sleep requirements.

This is particularly exciting for us, as this enables couples to have their own individual sides completely customized to their needs and makes fighting over choosing the right mattress as a couple a thing of the past.

Construction and Materials

The Helix Plus is a 12″ hybrid mattress made up of pocketed coils and foams of different densities. The construction of the mattress varies based on the preferences entered on an online questionnaire that is utilized to configure the mattress before it is built.

The Helix Plus mattress consists of the following layers, which are custom configured via altering their densities and weights to achieve the proper degree of customization for your sleep preferences.

  • 1″ Comfort Layer – This layer is 1″ Helix Dynamic Foam which is a special latex-foam hybrid alternative, designed to be denser to accommodate higher weight and contour to your body.
  • 1″ Support Layer – This layer is 1″ of ultra dense Helix Memory Plus Foam, which is also specially designed to accommodate higher weights, provide support and extraordinary pressure relief.
  • 1″ Transition Layer – This layer is 1″ of slightly firmer, high-density High-Grade Polyfoam, designed to provide ergonomic support, contour and cushioning to your body and serve as a transition layer between the foam layers above and firmer coils bellow. It also allows a seamless progression of your body weight into the mattress.
  • 8″ XL Body Shape Layer – This layer is 8″ of individually-wrapped innerspring coils designed to cradle and support heavier weight and limit excessive motion transfer, while reinforced steel coils provide excellent edge support.
  • 1″ Base Layer – This layer is 1″ of DuraDense high density support foam that serves as the foundation and support for the mattress and increases its durability and stability.

It increases the overall comfort of this mattress and allows greater airflow through the mattress to keep you cool throughout the night.

Firmness & Support

The Helix Plus mattress, like other Helix mattresses, is unique in that there is no pre-set level of firmness that can be evaluated based on pre-set factory construction of the mattress.

Like we mentioned in our previous Helix reviews, the entire idea behind the Helix mattresses is to do exactly the opposite – provide customized firmness and support for each sleeper, not only in one bed – but in one bed with different values for each side.

This functions in such way where Helix takes the output from their questionnaire and either builds two individual mattresses, then fuses them together to create one – or takes the output from the questionnaire and designs a mattress blending both sleeper preferences.

As part of our Helix Plus mattress review, we filled out the questionnaire that asks for each of our individual height, weight, sleep preferences, firmness preferences, and other specific information to design the mattress.

We have included some screen shots of this process below:

Once the design and manufacturing is complete, the mattress is then delivered with the individual firmness, support, and comfort preferences that were defined in the questionnaire to your doorstep.

In our case, my side (Andrew) required more support for my heavier weight, but a softer feel. This resulted in a mattress that felt around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale for me (10 being firmest).

This mattress may feel a bit firmer to the sleepers of the lighter weight as it is specially built to suit the needs of heavier sleepers. However, it has an incredibly soft top comfort layer made of the Helix Dynamic Foam that contours to your body and cushions your shoulders and hips to provide you with the necessary comfort and pressure relief.

The top comfort layer will aid in muscle recovery and react quickly to your body shape and any change in your sleeping position due to its latex-foam hybrid structure. It also allowed me to sink into the mattress to a certain degree without making me feel trapped in foam.

In addition, the mattress has an additional layer of high-density foam designed for heavier weights that worked perfectly with the other foam layers and pocketed coil layer and supported my heavy weight with ease.

It provided excellent support for all sleeping positions, especially side sleeping. It had enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle my hips and shoulders and prevent the appearance of pressure points while it also had enough firmness necessary for back sleeping.

As Kaye generally prefers firmer mattresses than I do, and weighs almost half my weight, her side of the mattress ended up being slightly firmer and not requiring additional weight support that my needs require. She felt her side was more of a 7,5 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).

As we have already mentioned, we love that Helix gives you the ability to combine individual firmness and comfort preferences in one bed.

Just like the previous Helix models we have reviewed, the Helix Plus did a great job of meeting our individual firmness and support needs and provided us with what each of us enjoy in the same bed.

Comfort

With the taller 12″ construction and an extra layer and other higher density materials specially designed to meet the needs of heavier people, this mattress provides just the right amount of comfort and support necessary for a quality and restorative night’s sleep.

The top comfort layer made of the Helix Dynamic Foam and Memory Plus Foam layer offer a nice soft feel to the top and create the right pressure relief and contour for your body.

These layers combined with the somewhat firmer transition layer and pocketed coils beneath cradled and supported my body and provided me with the perfect balance of comfort and support

The Helix Plus  also has enough responsiveness and bounce coming from its latex-foam hybrid layer and pocketed coils which, when combined with the other foams of different densities, not only prevent you from sinking too deep into the mattress and feeling stuck in it, but also facilitate moving around in bed during the night and make late night adult activities quite enjoyable.

Sleeping Hot

The Helix Plus mattress does an excellent job of sleeping cool due to the use of latex-like foam on top and unique pocketed coil layer that allows the air to circulate freely through the mattress and prevent the build up of heat.

Besides this, the Helix Plus, like other Helix mattresses, features a special Two Touch Design cover created to increase airflow through the mattress and keep the surface of your bed cool and pleasant at night.

In addition, the split design of the bed ensured that our individual heat did not transfer over to each other, which seemed to make a difference in the overall temperature regulation of the mattress.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

Just like the previous Helix mattresses that we have reviewed, the Helix Plus varies in terms of the amount of sinkage depending on each side of the mattress and our weights.

On my side, I compressed the softer top comfort layer quite a bit, but the denser and firmer support and transition layers below combined with the pocketed coil layer did an excellent job of supporting my heavy weight and distributing it evenly across the bed. They lifted my body and prevented me from sinking too much into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.

This mattress provided me more with the feeling of sleeping on the top of it rather than inside it and Kaye’s side did the same for her and perfectly supported her lighter weight.

The split design of this mattress also prevented her from rolling into me which is often the case with lower quality mattresses due to our weight differences. She also didn’t experience the common feel of “sinking into a hole” which resulted in peaceful and truly enjoyable nights for both.

Edge support is excellent with this mattress due to the quality wrapped coils used in its construction that not only cradle your body but also feature a reinforced perimeter to provide extraordinary edge support.

It is true that I compressed its top comfort layer to a certain degree when when sitting and lying near the edge, but the firmer and denser support and transition layers, as well as the pocketed coil layer, supported my heavy weight with ease and prevented me from bottoming out.

Kaye’s side did the same for her and we didn’t experience any rolling off the edges sensation.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Helix Plus mattress gets high marks in this category for not having much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Its hybrid design significantly reduced the amount of of-gassing and any smell that was present dissipated within a few hours.

Summary

The Helix Plus that has been recently released by one of the leading online mattress companies is a premium mattress specially designed to meet the needs of heavier people. This and the level of customization that it allows make it a truly unique mattress and unlike any other mattress currently present on the online mattress market.

By utilizing the individual sleeper’s answers to an online questionnaire, Helix Sleep configures and manufactures mattresses that are customized according to the needs of each sleeper.

Therefore, their mattresses can have a split design and different firmness on each side and such mattresses are a must for couples of varying weight and sleep preferences.

If you are a heavier sleeper and you are looking for a comfortable and supportive mattress that will be cozy and breathable and still provide a great support in all sleeping positions, then the Helix Plus may be an excellent choice for you.

The Helix Dynamic Foam used in the top comfort layer really offers a soft and cushionly feel and great pressure relief while the denser and somewhat firmer foam layers below aid in this and work together with the pocketed coil layer to provide extraordinary support.

Besides this, the Helix Plus has a nice degree of bounce and responsiveness coming from its Dynamic Foam and pocketed coil layers which makes changing of positions and moving around in bed during the night easier and makes this mattress a perfect one for sex.

In addition, this mattress sleeps incredibly cool which is great for heavier sleepers who tend to overheat at night.

Finally the ability to have a mattress fully customized to our individual needs and sleep preferences makes the Helix Plus mattress, just like the previous Helix mattresses that we have reviewed, one of our favorite mattresses for couples.
