Is the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Mattress Right for You?
Buy the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Mattress if you like:
- Supportive mattresses – This mattress provides a good support from the pocketed coil system and various foam layers and works perfectly for all sleeping styles and all types of sleepers particularly heavier sleepers.
- Firm mattresses – Being designed with heavier sleepers in mind, this mattress falls more on the firmer side of the spectrum.
- Mattresses with bounce and responsiveness – The combination of foams and individually encased coils used in the mattress construction creates a nice degree of bounce and responsiveness which facilitates moving around in bed and makes this mattress good for sex.
You might not like the Brooklyn Bedding Titan Mattress if:
- You don’t like the feeling of sleeping on top of a mattress – The Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress is a foam/coil hybrid which provides the feel of sleeping on top of a mattress rather than inside it, so, if you prefer mattresses with a softer feel, then this mattress may not be the right pick for you.
- You don’t like firm mattresses – As mentioned, the Titan mattress is made specifically for heavier sleepers and falls more on the firmer side. So, if you don’t like mattresses with a firmer feel or you are of a smaller frame, this one may not work for you.
- You don’t like the bounce and responsiveness of hybrid mattresses – The Titan is a foam/coil hybrid which makes it have a lot more bounce and responsiveness than all foam mattresses. If you don’t like bouncy mattresses that are likely to cause a little motion transfer, the Brooklyn Bedding Titan may not be the best choice for you.
Construction and Materials
The Brooklyn Bedding Titan is a 11″ pocketed coil and foam hybrid made up of the following layers:
- 1″ Gel-Infused Memory Foam Layer – This layer is 1″ of quilted, gel-infused memory foam that resists body impressions and provides cooling comfort while you sleep.
- 2″ TitanFlex Foam Layer – This layer is 2″ of a patented TitanFlex foam designed to provide responsive contouring and a targeted pressure point relief. This foam has a quick response to pressure which also gives some bounce to the mattress, prevents sagging and eliminates the feeling of being stuck in foam.
- 6″ Pocketed Coil Layer – This layer is made of 6″ of up to 952 individually encased TitanCaliber coils designed to provide incredible support and enough responsiveness while isolating your movement to minimize sleep disturbance and promote better airflow through the mattress.
- 2″ Base Layer – This layer is 2″ of a high-density supportive base foam that acts as a solid and durable foundation for the coil and foam layers above and boosts the overall support of this mattress.
As for the cover of the Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress, it is made of a highly breathable premium phase change molecule fabric that promotes cooling and is extremely pleasant and cool to the touch.
Besides this, the company allows you to choose between a cooling top panel designed to moderate temperature and provide ultimate cooling on contact and a cooling Talalay latex mattress topper designed to provide added contouring and excellent pressure relief.
Firmness & Support
The Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress is offered in only one firmness option designed to provide support that heavier sleepers need and we felt it to be around a 7.5 out of 10 (10 being the firmest), so it’s more on a firm side.
We both felt this mattress to be more on the firmer side, although there is some cushioning coming from its soft quilted cover and foam layers beneath.
If the mattress feels a bit too firm to you, you can add a cooling Talalay latex mattress topper that will provide more contouring to your body and excellent pressure relieving comfort.
Brooklyn Bedding has their own firmness scale on their site and they rate this mattress a little firmer, in a range you can see below.
As we always preach, firmness is largely weight dependent, and I usually compress the top comfort layers of most mattresses more than Kaye does as I weigh considerably more than she does (230 lbs vs. 115).
In such cases, I often feel more of the support layers which are usually harder and not so comfortable But, this wasn’t the case with the Broklyn Bedding Titan.
Although I compressed the top comfort layers of the Titan mattress quite a bit, they supported my heavier weight with ease, distributed it evenly across the bed and didn’t cause me to push all the way down through it and come to rest on the harder support layers below.
We are primarily side sleepers and the top comfort layers of the Brooklyn Bedding Titan allowed us to sink into them to a certain degree, cradled our hips and shoulders to prevent the appearance of pressure points while they also had enough responsiveness and bounce to stop us from sinking too much into the mattress and feel enveloped by it.
The mattress provided us with the feeling of of floating and sleeping more on the top of the mattress rather than inside it. The foam layers on top both cushioned and supported my body, while the strong pocketed coil layer below did an excellent job of supporting my heavy weight and our weights combined sleeping as a couple and distributed them evenly across the bed.
Various layers in this mattress work together to provide a level of firmness that works perfectly for all sleeping styles and sleepers of different weights, especially heavier ones.
A high-quality hybrid construction and materials of this mattress offer the amount of support that a heavy sleeper such as myself needs, and although it falls more on the firmer side, it has enough softness and pressure relieving comfort at the same time that both Kaye and myself prefer as a couple sharing a mattress.
Comfort
As mentioned, the Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress may feel a bit firmer, especially if you are of a smaller frame and not so heavy, but you also have the option to add the soft Talalay Latex topper and increase its overall comfort.
Although we felt it to be more on the firm side of the spectrum, we also found it to be quite comfortable with its nice 11″ thickness, quilted cover, various foam layers and highest quality pocketed coil system, which all work together not only to provide extraordinary support, but also to cradle your body and provide a comfortable sleeping surface.
The top comfort layers made of gel-infused memory foam and the special TitanFlex foam combined with the individually pocketed coils do an excellent job of relieving pressure points and promoting proper spinal alignment.
There is also enough bounce and responsiveness to this mattress coming from its hybrid coil construction which facilitates changing positions and getting in and out of bed during the night and which makes this mattress excellent for sex.
Sleeping Hot
The Brooklyn Bedding Titan sleeps quite cool due to the use of the gel-infused memory foam designed to disperse excessive body heat, prevent its build-up and provide cooling comfort while you sleep.
In addition, the individually encased TitanCaliber coils combined with the soft and breathable cover made of the phase change molecule fabric allow the air to circulate freely through the mattress and aid in cooling.
Besides this, the company allows you to choose what you will have on the top of a mattress. Therefore, you can choose between a cooling top panel designed to moderate temperature and provide ultimate cooling on contact and a cooling Talalay latex mattress topper. No matter which one you choose, both options will promote cooling even further.
So, this mattress sleeps incredibly cool due to its hybrid design featuring individually encased coils and various cooling materials used in its construction that all work together to provide a cool and comfortable sleep, effectively wick away moisture and eliminate that sticky sweaty feeling that many other mattresses tend to cause.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Brooklyn Bedding Titan does an amazing job with minimizing sinkage, especially when compared to most other hybrid mattresses we have reviewed.
Sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weigh around 230 lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.
As I have already mentioned, I often tend to compress the top comfort layers of most hybrid mattresses quite a bit and come to rest on their coil support layers which are hard and not so comfortable.
But, this wasn’t the case with the Titan mattress at all. Being designed specially for heavier sleepers like myself, it is built of durable, highest quality materials that prevent excessive sinkage to the least bit.
It is true that I sunk into its softer top comfort layers made of foam to a certain degree but I didn’t feel the pocketed coil system below.
The 6″ pocketed coil system made of up to 952 individually encased TitanCaliber coils, lifted my heavy body weight and our combined weights as a couple with ease, distributed them evenly across the bed and prevented me from sinking too deep into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.
As mentioned, the mattress provides the feeling of floating and sleeping more on the top of it rather than inside it.
Edge support is also good with this mattress and I didn’t compress the edges too much at all when sitting or lying near them and didn’t get that well know feel of sliding off the bed. This also makes the Titan an excellent choice for couples or those who tend to roll over the entire mattress in their sleep.
There is some motion transfer with this mattress which can be expected from a coil and foam hybrid that provides more bounce than an all foam mattress due to the pocketed coils in its construction. But, it is nothing too serious and won’t disturb your sleep.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Brooklyn Bedding gets high marks in this category for not having too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box. Its hybrid coil and foam construction minimized the degree of off-gassing that all foam mattresses usually have.
