You might not like the Brentwood Home Crystal Cove mattress if:
- You don’t like mattresses with a lot of bounce – The combination of latex, foam and innerspring coils used in this mattress construction creates a pretty large degree of bounce.
Construction and Materials
The Crystal Cove is a 13″ latex, microcoil, and foam hybrid mattress. It is comprised of the following layers:
- 2″ All Natural Latex Layer – This layer is 2″ of all natural Dunlop latex designed to provide responsive comfort, ensure cooling during sleep as well as pressure relief.
- 1″ Flow Foam Layer – This layer is 1″ of a plush CentiPUR-US Certified Flow Foam that makes up the top comfort layer of the other side of the mattress and it is designed to provide perfect pressure relief for more restorative sleep.
- 2″ Charcoal-infused Memory Foam – This layer is 2″ of the innovative Charcoal-infused memory foam that is known to be naturally cooling and plush. It is designed to help the body get rid of toxins and respond to body heat in order to provide adaptive comfort and excellent pressure relief.
- 8″ Combi-Zone Coil Layer – This layer is 8″ of individually wrapped coils (1130 in a Queen) that allow precise body contouring and provide optimal support necessary for any sleeping position. Reinforced coils in the lumbar region provide more support to your lower back while edge retention coils allow you to sleep or sit near the edges without compressing them under your weight or rolling off. Pocketed coils also isolate noise and motion transfer to a large degree thus reducing the possibility of partner disturbance.
The cover of the Crystal Cove is an extremely soft, artfully-designed stitched gray cover that is highly breathable and pleasant to the touch.
Besides this, there are four upholstered, high quality handles that make flipping the mattress over easy. They elegantly frame all sides of the mattress and perfectly match the style of the cover.
Firmness & Support
As the Brentwood Home Crystal Cove is a dual-sided mattress it has a soft and firm side. The soft side with the Charcoal-infused memory foam falls around a 5 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest) while the firmer side with the natural Dunlop latex as the top layer is slightly firmer and we would say it is around a 7 on the firmness scale.
The plush side worked perfectly for us as we generally prefer the feel of memory foam over latex. It is true that it was more on a softer side to me as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, and I tend to press through the top comfort layers quite a bit, but I didn’t feel more of the bouncier springs in the mattress like it was the case with some other mattresses.
As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs. The Charcoal-infused foam perfectly molded to our shoulders and hips and we felt our bodies to be well supported in all sleeping positions.
The firmer side, however provided greater support due to the responsive nature of the Dunlop latex and also worked well for all sleeping positions. It was supportive while also comfortable enough and did not cause any hip or shoulder pain which some mattresses tend to do.
The pocketed coil layer and latex layer really provide a high degree of bounce and responsiveness with the Crystal Cove, and the nice thick 13″ design supports heavier sleepers such as myself quite well.
The zoned pocketed coil layer also provided support to those areas of our bodies where we needed it most such as hips and shoulders. It distributed my heavy weight and our weights combined as a couple evenly across the bed and worked together with the top comfort layers to relieve pressure points.
How Comfortable is the Brentwood Home Crystal Cove?
Both Kaye and I really like this mattress from Brentwood Home it is so much removed from the majority of the beds we have tested to date here at Memory Foam Talk. As with all Brentwood Home mattresses, the premium materials and design really set the Crystal Cove apart from most other mattresses we have tested.
The Crystal Cove with its dual-sided design, which allows you to choose your firmness level by flipping the mattress over, is an extremely comfortable mattress.
The soft cover and the top comfort layers provide a really comfortable sleeping surface and they perfectly work with the layer of pocketed coils to provide both comfort and support necessary for a quality and restorative night’s sleep.
In addition, the Charcoal-infused memory foam also has many healing properties which help purify your body from toxins and it quickly responds to changes in your body temperature and provides a highly adaptive comfort and excellent pressure relief.
The latex and coil layer provide a high level of responsiveness and a nice degree of bounce to the mattress which facilitates changing positions during the night and which also makes it ideal for late night adult entertainment.
Sleeping Hot
One great thing about the Crystal Cove is that it sleeps incredibly cool due to its unique construction and the use of the breathable cover, Charcoal-infused foam, natural latex and pocketed coil layer. We did not get the sticky sweaty feeling that some foam mattresses cause during the night.
The Charcoal-infused memory foam layer quickly responds and adapts to your body temperature while the natural latex, known for its cooling properties, aids in cooling. These layers work perfectly with the pocketed coil layer to allow greater airflow through the mattress. prevent the retention of heat and keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Brentwood Home Crystal Cove mattress does a good job with sinkage and motion transfer. As we always tend to mention, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weight around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less, naturally.
Like I have already mentioned, there was some sinkage on the softer side. My heavy weight quickly compressed the plush Charcoal-infused memory foam layer, but I couldn’t feel the pocketed coil layer beneath, and the pocketed coil layer did a good job of preventing me from sinking even further into the mattress and feeling trapped.
As for the firmer side, it caused considerably less sinkage than the softer side. The responsive and bouncy nature of the Dunlop latex did an excellent job of minimizing the amount of sinkage and worked perfectly with the pocketed coil layer to lift my body weight and our combined weights and distribute them evenly across the bed.
Edge support was good with this mattress too due to the structurally reinforced perimeter which prevented me from compressing the edges too much under my weight when sitting or lying near them and we didn’t feel any “rolling off the edges” sensation.
As for motion transfer, there was some motion transfer with the Crystal Cove due to the use of a bouncy latex and pocketed coil layer. However, it was nothing too extreme and the individually pocketed coils minimized the amount of motion transfer to a large degree.
The softer side has less motion transfer due to the use of memory foam which worked with the pocketed coils to prevent any sleep disturbance.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Brentwood Home Crystal Cove gets high marks in this category for not having a noticeable smell upon opening the box.
Most foam mattresses experience a degree of off-gassing and odor from being compressed and packaged in plastic for shipping, but the Crystal Cove differs from most in this regard by not having very much at all. High marks in this category.
