Construction and Materials

The Big Fig mattress is a 13″ pocketed coil, latex and foam hybrid made up of the following layers:

• 0.5″ Gel-Infused Latex Foam Layer – This layer is 0.5″ of gel-infused latex foam that provides both a soft comfort and responsive support that traditional memory foams often fail to provide. This special layer also allows greater airflow through the mattress and promotes cooling.
• 3 x 1″ High Density Foam Layer – There are 3 separate 1″ layers of high density poly foams that have enough firmness to provide support and a quick response to pressure which also gives some bounce to the mattress, prevents sagging and eliminates the feeling of being stuck in foam.
• 7″ Pocketed Coil Layer – This layer is made of 7″ of individually pocketed coils that provide incredible support and bounce to the mattress. They also promote better airflow through the mattress and offer enough responsiveness while isolating your movement to minimize sleep disturbance.
• 3″ Edge Foam Layer – This layer is 3″ of high density poly foam that surrounds the pocketed coil system and provides extra strength and solid edge support meant to support heavier sleepers and prevent them from bottoming out.
• 1.5″ base layer – This layer is 1.5″ of long-lasting supportive base foam that acts as a solid and durable foundation for the coil and foam layers above and boosts the overall support of this mattress.

The cover of the Big Fig is made of a soft ThermoGel treated fabric that works to lower body temperature and provide you with a cool and comfortable sleeping experience.

It is quilted with a 1″ of soft foam which adds to the comfort and overall luxurious feel of this mattress and is tufted in 16 places to prevent the materials within the mattress from shifting over time.

Firmness & Support

The Big Fig mattress is offered in only one firmness option designed to provide support that heavier sleepers need and we rate it around a 7.5/8 out of 10 (10 being the firmest), so it’s more on a firm side.

We both felt this mattress to be more on the firmer side, although we initially felt a soft cushioning of its the quilted cover and latex and foam layers beneath.

We are primarily side sleepers and these layers allowed us to sink into them to a certain degree, cradled our hips and shoulders to prevent the appearance of pressure points while they also had enough responsiveness and bounce to stop us from sinking too much into the mattress and feel enveloped by it.

This gives us the feeling of sleeping more on the top of the mattress rather than inside it. As mentioned, the latex and foam layers on top both cushioned and supported my body and combined with the strong pocketed coil layer below they did an excellent job of supporting my heavy weight and our weights combined sleeping as a couple and distributed them evenly across the bed.

The multiple layers of this mattress work together to provide a level of firmness that works perfectly for all sleeping styles and sleepers of different weights, especially heavier ones.

Individually pocketed coils and high quality dense foams all work together to provide an amazing amount of support and keep your spine properly aligned regardless of the position you choose to sleep in while also offering enough comfort necessary for a painless and comfortable night’s sleep.

There is also enough bounce and responsiveness to this mattress coming from its hybrid coil construction which facilitates changing positions and getting in and out of bed during the night and which makes late night adult entertainment quite favorable.

Therefore, the high-quality hybrid construction and materials of this mattress offer the amount of support that a heavy sleeper such as myself needs, and although it is more on the firmer side due to the strong and quality materials used in its construction, it has enough comfort at the same time that both Kaye and myself prefer as a couple sharing a mattress.

Comfort

As mentioned the Big Fig mattress may feel more on the firmer side, especially if you are of a smaller frame and not so heavy, but it is also quite comfortable with its nice 13″ thickness, quilted top, latex layer and various high-quality foam layers which mold and hug your body and provide a comfortable sleeping surface.

These layers combined with the individually pocketed coils do an excellent job of relieving pressure points, isolating movement and supporting proper spinal alignment.

As soon as you lie down on this mattress you will feel the softness and luxuriousness of the cover, quilted foam, latex and other foam layers below that will gently cradle your body for pressure relief and provide enough responsiveness and bounce to prevent you from feeling stuck in foam.

The pocketed coil layer and the firmer base layer beneath will provide you with an excellent support and a nice lift and the feeling of sleeping on the top of a mattress rather than inside it.

So,the Big Fig mattress is made with strong and supportive materials that will also cushion your body and make you feel comfortable.

It also sleeps incredibly cool due to the soft and breathable ThermoGel infused mattress cover, gel-infused latex layer, special foams and pocketed coil construction. They all work together to promote greater airflow through the mattress, dissipate excessive body heat, wick away moisture and cool your body as you sleep.

Sleeping Hot

As I said, this luxury hybrid sleeps incredibly cool due to the soft and breathable ThermoGel infused mattress cover that makes for a pretty cool and comfortable sleeping surface that effectively wicks away moisture and eliminates that sticky sweaty feeling that many other mattresses, especially those built entirely of foam tend to cause.

There is also gel-infused latex layer below that helps dissipate excessive body heat and promotes greater airflow through the mattress.

In addition, special breathable foams used in the construction of this mattress and its hybrid coil design aid in cooling in that they also allow the air to circulate freely through the mattress, help in ventilation and prevent the build up of heat.

The use of the ThermoGel materials in the cover, gel-infused latex layer, and breathable foams combined with the hybrid coil construction all do a great job of ensuring the mattress sleeps cooler than most mattresses we have reviewed.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

The Big Fig hybrid mattress does an amazing job with minimizing sinkage, especially when compared to most other hybrid mattresses we have reviewed.

As we always preach, sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent and the fact that I weigh around 230 lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress.

I often tend to compress the top comfort layers of most hybrid mattresses quite a bit and come to rest on their coil support layers which are hard and not so comfortable.

But, this wasn’t the case with the Big Fig mattress. Being designed specially for heavier sleepers like myself, it is built of durable, highest quality materials and allows you to sink into its softer top layers to a certain degree and yet you won’t feel the coil construction beneath.

Although I compressed its softer top comfort layers a little, I did not feel the coil layer beneath. In addition, the 7″ pocketed coil layer prevented me from sinking too deep into the mattress and provided me with a nice lift and the feeling of sleeping on top of a mattress rather than inside it.

The mattress supported my individual heavy weight and our combined weights with ease and distributed them evenly across the bed.

Edge support is very good with this mattress. It includes the specific edge support foam in its construction which not only prevents the larger individuals from compressing the edges totally under their weight, but which also allows them to use the entire surface of the bed without making them feel as if they are going to slide off the bed if they get close to the edges.

This also makes the Big Fig an excellent choice for couples or those who tend to roll over the entire mattress in their sleep. I did not compress the mattress much at all when sitting on the edge and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or had them compressed under my weight when sleeping near them.

There is some motion transfer with this mattress which can be expected from a coil, latex and foam hybrid that provides more bounce than an all foam or latex mattress due to the pocketed coils in its construction. But, it is nothing too serious and won’t disturb your sleep.

The thick foam layers and the pocketed coil system of the Big Fig do a great job of minimizing the amount of motion transfer so you won’t feel much disruption or shaking of the mattress when you change positions or get in and out of the bed during the night.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Big Fig mattress gets high marks in this category for not having any noticeable smell upon opening the box. Its hybrid coil, latex and foam construction minimized the degree of off-gassing that all foam mattresses usually have.

Off-gassing is often a problem for many all-foam beds which come compressed and shipped in a box, but thankfully this isn’t the case with the Big Fig.
