Construction and Materials
The BedInABox Tranquillium is a 12″ all foam mattress made up of 3 layers of various foams:
- 3″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 3″ of CoolRest 3lb gel memory foam, which has a slow response to pressure and allows you to sink into it to a certain degree for a perfect contouring and pressure relief. It helps regulate temperature to keep you cool and comfortable and also features an open cell design which allows greater airflow through the mattress and aids in cooling.
- 2″ Transition Layer – This layer is 2″ of Pluralux foam that provides the cushioning of memory foam while it also provides support. It serves as a transition layer between the soft top comfort layer and firm base layer below and it will gently transition your body weight into the firmer base layer.
- 7″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 7″ of Sure Align 2lb density support foam that acts as the foundation and provides deep compression support for your body to keep your spine properly aligned.

The cover is cool and pleasant to the touch; it allows greater airflow through the mattress and wicks away moisture to keep you cool and dry throughout the night.
Firmness & Support
The BedInABox Tranquillium mattress only comes in one firmness option and we rate it around a 6 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
It feels like a medium-firm mattress, in that the soft top comfort layer provides a plush, luxurious feel to the top while the slightly firmer transition layer and a firm base layer provide firmer support below.
With many mattresses, since I am a heavier sleeper, I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers which are often harder and not as comfortable.
However, this wasn’t the case with the Tranquillium mattress. The soft top comfort layer allowed me to sink into the mattress to a degree, but the slightly firmer transition layer below and the firm base layer prevented me from sinking all the way down through the mattress.
Thankfully this prevented me from bottoming out on the foundation or causing the other uncomfortable feeling of being trapped in foam that some low-quality all foam mattresses can cause.

A nice 7″ thick base layer made of a high density Sure Align support foam combined with the transition and top comfort layers provided excellent support. It lifted my heavy weight and our combined weights as a couple with ease and distributed them evenly across the bed.
We felt the Tranquillium bed did a great job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions, particularly side sleeping.
We are primarily side sleepers and we like beds that have enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle our shoulders and hips and relieve pressure points, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomach or back.
As I am a heavier sleeper, I prefer beds with much softer top comfort layers such as beds featuring soft memory foam on top that hugs and molds to my hips and shoulders.
The Tranquillium has it all. It provided the right amount of support needed to keep our spines properly aligned and it also had enough give in the top comfort layer to cushion our hips and shoulders and eliminate any possibility of the appearance of pressure points.
Comfort
The BedInABox Tranuillium is quite comfortable with its plush top comfort layer and luxurious cover providing a soft and supple sleeping surface, while the foam layers below work to support and contour the body during sleep.
The exterior of the Tranquillium is very soft and comfortable, with the luxurious soft Tencel cover and the top comfort layer doing a good job of providing a comfortable sleeping surface. This bed is much more comfortable than many of the other all foam beds we have tested, and one of the reasons we have placed it so high in our Top 10 Best Mattress list.
The softness of the cover combined with the initial soft response from the upper foam layer made for a comfortable night’s sleep and this was shared by both of us.

The soft gel memory foam on top will allow your body to sink into it for perfect pressure relief, but it won’t make you feel stuck in foam as it also has some responsiveness and it will allow you to change positions and get in and out of bed easily during the night.
This mattress is also designed to be highly breathable in order to promote better temperature regulation and help you stay cool while you sleep.
Sleeping Hot
The Tranquillium mattress gets high marks in this category for not sleeping hot at all. It is very effective when it comes to temperature regulation and heat dissipation and has various cooling properties.
Different foams used in the construction of this mattress are specially designed to promote greater breathability and airflow, prevent the build-up of excessive body heat, and keep you cool and comfortable all night long.
The 3 inches of 3lb CoolRest Gel memory foam in the top comfort layer with its open cell structure prevent the build up of excessive body heat and promote greater airflow through the mattress. This gel memory foam is the most advanced and highest quality gel memory foam available on the market, and it definitely does the job keeping the Tranquillium mattress nice and cool.
As a couple sleeping in Texas, hot sticky memory foam mattresses are not a good thing and whether a foam mattress sleeps hot or cool is something we can quickly determine based on our years of experience testing all the leading foam beds on the market today. The BedInABox Tranquillium does an EXCELLENT job at keeping us cool at night.
In addition, the Tencel cover of this mattress features the special UltraCool Technology that wicks away both heat and moisture and help you stay dry and cool even if you are prone to overheating and sweating during the night.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
As for sinkage and motion transfer, there was not too much sinkage and motion transfer with this mattress at all.
As we always tend to mention, both sinkage and motion transfer are largely weight dependent, and as I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, I tend to sink a lot more into the mattress when sitting upright in bed or on the edge than she does.
With some lower quality all foam mattresses I quickly compress the top comfort layers and come to rest on the firmer support and base layers below which are often harder and not so comfortable, or I even tend to bottom out and come to rest on the foundation of our bed.

Tranquillium mattress profile
But this wasn’t the case with the Tranquillium mattress at all. I sunk down into the soft top comfort layer some, but the slightly firmer transition layer below and the firm base layer prevented me from sinking too much into the mattress and feeling enveloped by it.
Edge support is very good with this bed, and better than with many mattresses we have reviewed. The high density foams used in the construction do a good job at providing even support throughout the mattress, including the edge.
I slept near the edge at times to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges sensation or have them compressed under my weight.
There is also minimal amount of motion transfer with this mattress due to its all foam construction which minimizes the amount of motion transfer to a large degree and prevents sleep disruption.
As couples sharing a mattress, motion transfer and sinkage is an important criteria we take into consideration when evaluating mattresses. Neither one of us likes to be “bounced” off the mattress when getting in or out of bed, nor do we like feeling the sensation of Kaye “rolling into” a hole that some foam mattresses cause to be created.
This was definitely not the case with the BedInABox Tranquillium, which gets high marks for not causing much motion transfer or sinkage.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The BedInABox Tranuillium gets high marks in this category as well for not having too much of a noticeable smell upon opening the box.
Some memory foam mattresses that are shipped compressed in a box suffer from the bad “off-gassing” odor due to the chemicals in the foam being trapped in the packaging and when unwrapped, getting released into the air and causing a bad smell.
This was not the case with the BedInABox Tranquillium, as the company has a lot of experience over the years getting this right. Any smell that was present quickly dissipated (within a few hours) as the mattress expanded and regained its shape.

Summary
All in all, the BedInABox Tranquillium is a great mattress that combines multiple layers of high quality foam with a soft and extremely comfortable Tencel cover incorporating a unique UltraCool technology.
It is a medium-firm universal comfort mattress designed to meet the needs and sleep preferences of a wide range of sleepers.
The soft top comfort layer made of CoolRest gel memory foam provides that classic memory foam feel of hug and contour while the slightly firmer transition layer and firm base layer below prevent you from sinking too much into the mattress and feeling trapped in foam.
The mattress offers an ideal balance of pressure relieving comfort and support necessary for a proper spinal alignment and a comfortable and pain free night’s sleep.
In addition, the use of the multiple layers of high-quality, dense foams makes it have less motion transfer and have good edge support which is a great feature for couples that share a bed.
As mentioned, the Tranquillium sleeps incredibly cool due to the use of the open-cell gel memory foam in the top comfort layer and the soft and breathable Tencel cover that includes the special UltraCool technology aimed at keeping you cool and dry all night long.
If you’re in the market for a high-quality, all foam mattress that is comfortable, supportive, sleeps cool, and a great price – hopefully this review of the BedInABox Tranquillium mattress helps in your next purchase decision.
