Construction and Materials

The Bear Hybrid is a 14″ latex, microcoil, and foam hybrid mattress mattress. It is comprised of the following layers:

  • 2″ Comfort Layer – This layer is 3″ of Bear’s signature performance foam that is designed to provide comfort and responsiveness  as well as pressure relief and additional cooling to the mattress.
  • 2″ Contour Layer – This layer is made up of 2″ of gel memory foam that provides body contour as well as enables a cooler sleeping environment.
  • 2.5″ Support Layer – This layer is 2.5″ of individually wrapped coils that provide support for the mattress and deep compression support for the body during sleep. In addition, this layer provides bounce and responsiveness as well as aids in air flow.
  • 5″ Base Layer – The base layer is made up of 5″ of high-density polyfoam, which provides the bed with its structure and cradles the pocketed coil system above.

The cover of the Bear Hybrid has the inclusion of Celliant in it, similar to the original all-foam Bear mattress, a material that is reputed to help with muscle recovery and restorative sleep.  This top layer is also quilted with 2″ of super soft foam which gives the mattress a soft, luxurious feel.

The feel of the Bear hybrid mattress is much more luxurious than the original Bear, with a quilted foam top layer with the Celliant that gives the mattress a pillow-top feel and increased comfort compared to the all foam offering.

Firmness & Support

The Bear hybrid only comes in one firmness, and we feel that it is around a 6-7 out of 10 on the firmness scale (10 being firmest.)  The Bear Hybrid is much firmer than the original all foam Bear mattress, largely due to the stiffer coils in the support layer.

In terms of firmness, we feel that the Hybrid is much firmer as mentioned than the all-foam Bear mattress. When lying down, the mattress did not cause much sinkage with my heavy weight, and feels a lot firmer than expected.  This is often the case with many of the leading hybrid mattresses on the market we have tested, and is along the lines of others we have tested.

In terms of support, the Bear Hybrid mattress does a good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions. As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.

I definitely felt good support in my shoulders and hips when sleeping on the Bear mattress, although the top comfort layer didn’t provide as much softness and comfort as I would have liked personally. We are fans of the memory foam hug and contour feel, and for side sleeping this is rather important, as some firm mattresses cause my shoulders and hips to go numb.

Thankfully the Bear Hybrid did not cause this, but it was much more firm than expected for side sleeping, compared to other hybrid mattresses.   This will be much better for back sleepers and stomach sleepers who normally prefer firmer mattresses.

Kaye, who likes firmer mattresses usually, felt the Bear Hybrid was also very supportive as well, which is often something we as a couple disagree on when both sleeping on a bed.

The pocketed coil construction and gel memory foam layers really provides a high degree of bounce and responsiveness with the Bear Hybrid and the nice thick 14.5″ design really supports heavier sleepers such as myself quite well.

Comfort

The Bear Hybrid provides a comfortable sleeping environment for sure, with the 14.5″ thick mattress providing a soft, luxurious exterior and the quilted cover with the Celiant exterior providing a soft, supple sleep surface.

If you like the feeling of “sleeping on top of” your mattress, as compared to “sleeping down in” as we like to say, then the Hybrid will be a good choice for you. The Bear Hybrid definitely does not make you sink down into it, and as mentioned, provides more of a “floating on top” of feel.

This feel is not for everyone, and why mattress feel is very subjective. Kaye and I personally like the hug and contour of memory foam, and feeling cradled down in foam which is something many all foam mattresses provide.   The mattress really supports heavier sleepers such as myself quite well with its 14.5″ thick design.

The Bear Hybrid, by comparison, and as mentioned, is more of a “sleeping on the surface” type mattress. The support and bounce of the innerspring coils provides that feel, with the foam layers providing a degree of hug and contour but not the primary feel.

The soft exterior cover provides a really comfortable sleeping surface, and the top comfort layer of gel memory foam combined with the layer of pocketed coils  provides a very supple and comfortable top layer to the mattress.

The foam and micro coil spring design provides a high level of responsiveness and a degree of bounce to the mattress. This makes late night adult entertainment quite favorable 😉

Sleeping Hot

One great thing about the Bear Hybrid is that we did not get the sticky sweaty feeling that some foam mattresses cause during the night.  The bed sleeps quite cool due to the multiple layers of gel memory foam,  coils, and the  Celliant top cover.

One big deal breaker for us with mattresses, and especially foam ones, is whether they sleep hot or cool – which as a couple, is a super important criteria.  The hybrid design by nature helps keep the Bear Hybrid mattress cool, as the innerspring coil layers do a great job at creating air flow throughout the mattress.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

The Bear Hybrid mattress does a great job with sinkage and motion transfer.  As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.  Due to the hybrid coil construction, there was more of the latter (motion transfer) than the former (sinkage.)

The fact that I (Andrew) weight around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less, naturally.

There was an minimal amount of sinkage for me with my 230lb weight, as I didn’t compress down through the top layers very much and tended to bounce a bit on the mattress when adjusting positions.

Edge support wasn’t too bad, and with my heavier weight, I didn’t compress through the top comfort layers much at all. Even less so for Kaye, who weighs half what I do.

When I slept closer to the edge of the Bear Hybrid, I did not compress the edges much, however, which was a good sign, and something we look at when evaluating mattresses. You don’t want to “roll off” a bed during the night, which some mattresses with poor edge support often cause.

As for motion transfer, the construction of the Bear Hybrid, with the foam and micro coil construction, caused a little bit of motion transfer between both Kaye and myself when sleeping and changing positions during the night.

We did feel each other move around and get up during the night, as my heavier weight would move the mattress to a decent degree. This is more a function of the materials used and their high degree of response than any fault with the mattress per se.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Bear Hybrid mattress gets high marks in this category for not having a noticeable smell upon opening the box.

Most foam mattresses experience a degree of off-gassing and odor from being compressed and packaged in plastic for shipping, but the Bear Hybrid differs from most in this regard by not having very much at all. High marks in this category.

Summary

The Bear Hybrid mattress is another excellent mattress put out by Bear Mattress and extends the active lifestyle mattress concept to a luxury hybrid mattress. Bear Mattress did a great job at creating a luxury hybrid mattress that comes in at an impressive 14.5″ and incorporates many of the same innovations the original all foam Bear Mattress introduced on the market a few years agol.

The Bear Hybrid does a great job at providing a supportive yet comfortable sleeping environment that is on the firmer side, but great for heavier sleepers as well as couples, and for those that enjoy the feel of innerspring mattresses combined with the comfort of memory foam.

This mattress provides good support for all sleeping styles, particularly back and stomach sleepers, and is great for heavier sleepers and couples and has minimal sinkage and moderate motion transfer, while sleeping cool.

We hope that our Bear Hybrid mattress review helps you out in your next mattress purchase decision! If you have any questions, feel free to let us know!
