The 4Sleep mattress is a relatively new entrant into the online memory foam mattress market. The company was started by a husband and wife team with over 5 years experience in the mattress industry.
Their product is an all memory foam mattress with features designed to sleep cool and “forever change the way you sleep”. We will let you know from our review whether the mattress delivers on this promise in this review of the 4Sleep mattress.

Construction and Materials
The 4Sleep mattress is made up of 4 layers of foam, including some gel infused foam for temperature regulation and some innovative features such as dedicated edge support foam to minimize edge sinkage and compression.
This all foam construction uses a variety of different types of foam to deliver support and comfort for the sleeper. The 4Sleep gel infused cooling layer of memory foam does a very good job of keeping you cool while also providing a comfortable nights sleep, combined with their innovative cover design.
The 4Sleep mattress is composed of the following layers:
- 1.5″ Top layer – The top layer is made of gel infused memory foam. This layer is designed to provide cooling and comfort for the sleeper and achieve a targeted 87-90 degree temperature level.
- 1″ Transition layer – This layer is made up of a responsive transition foam designed to provide some bounce and response between the comfort and support layers.
- 1.5″ Support layer – This layer is designed to provide support to the sleeper and prevent any “bottoming out” or feeling stuck in the foam. Also helps with deep compression support for larger sleepers that may put more pressure on the mattress.
- 7″ Bottom layer – This foundation layer is made of dense support foam. This provides the foundation for the mattress that is designed to work with the top layers to create great support.
- 2.5″ Edge Support System – This is an additional layer of 2.5″ of support foam that lines each side of the mattress to reinforce the edges for sleeping as well as sitting on the edge.
The 4Sleep has a very uniquely designed cover that is a lot different than the majority of other memory foam mattresses on the market. It is made of polyester, viscose and Lycra and is very soft. The cover is designed to aid in cooling the mattress as well, by providing increased breathe-ability and cooling.
Firmness & Support
In terms of firmness, we feel the 4Sleep mattress is more of a 7 out of 10 (with 10 being the firmest). The mattress seemed a little firmer than expected, but was not uncomfortably so.
This is often the case with “universal firmness” mattresses, as they try to appeal to a wide range of sleepers.
In terms of support, the 4Sleep does a very good job of providing good support and weight distribution from the combination of foam layers. Both Kaye and myself felt supported during the night in all sleeping positions (we are mainly side sleepers.)
The different foam layers work well together to provide just the right amount of support without being too firm and causing pressure point pain, or too soft and not providing the support needed to sleep comfortably.
The edge support layer does a good job with preventing “roll off” towards the edges when sleeping, which is a unique feature this mattress has which others don’t.
We felt the 4Sleep was generally a comfortable mattress, although a bit on the firm side for us. The combination of foam layers does a good job of molding to your body during the night but at the same time being responsive and not causing you to feel stuck or trapped in foam.
The gel memory foam layer and transition layer provides a good amount of bounce as well, which helps when transitioning from side to side during the night.
The cover is very soft and comfortable, and seemed to help provide a cooler sleeping surface to the mattress. Neither of us woke up with any hip or shoulder pain which mattresses that are on the firmer side tend to cause us.
In addition, the mattress slept very cool as well, which is important when two sleepers share a bed.
The 4Sleep does a good job at temperature regulation due to the combination of gel-infused memory foam as well as the soft breathable cover.
We didn’t feel any excess heat during the night which sometimes is a problem with all foam mattresses. We would rate the 4Sleep above average in terms of not sleeping hot, and is significantly better than most memory foam mattresses in this regard.
Sinkage and Motion Transfer
As we always say in regards to sinkage and motion transfer, it is highly dependent on sleeper weight. As I weigh considerably more than Kaye, around 230 lbs, I tend to compress most foam mattresses a lot more than Kaye.
With the 4Sleep, however, being more on the firm side, we did not feel a large amount of sinkage. Kaye did not experience much sinkage as she weighs half of what I do, and felt the mattress did a good job of supporting her during the night.
We did not experience the common phenomenon of her “sinking in a hole” or rolling towards me from the unequal weight difference on the mattress. The memory foam did a good job of distributing our weight between us.
Edge support was much better than normal when sitting on the side with all my weight, primarily due to the Edge support technology used along the sides of the bed, which also did a good job as well during the night of not making us feel like we were rolling off the sides.
There was some motion transfer when we adjusted positions during the night which again is to be expected from the weight differential, but much less than softer mattresses.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The 4Sleep had very low smell / off-gassing odor when we opened it. There was a small degree of smell but nothing too overpowering compared to other mattresses that we have reviewed.
4Sleep is pretty standard when it comes to their warranty and support offerings. Most mattresses in this category share about the same offerings in terms of sleep trials and warranty, and 4Sleep is no exception here.
- Shipping – free shipping, arrives in 2-7 days
- 10 Year Warranty

- Made in the USA
We feel the 4Sleep mattress does a good job of standing out in a relatively crowded online mattress market by the use of its innovative features such as the Edge support, cooling gel foam, and unique cover.
The company does a good job of delivering a universal firmness mattress that is more on the firm side but should appeal to sleepers interested in that type of firmness.
The all memory foam construction does a good job of providing balance and pressure relieving support as well as a comfortable nights sleep. It sleeps cool and provides a moderate amount of response along with the traditional body hug that memory foam is known for.
All in all, one of the better universal comfort mattresses on the market. We hope this review of the 4Sleep mattress helps you with your next mattress purchase decision!
