Construction and Materials

The Nolah Signature is, as its very name says, a 12″ thick mattress composed of the following layers:

  • 2.5″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is made of 2.5″ of soft, cooling, and pressure-relieving proprietary Nolah Air Foam. It is designed to be more durable, sleep cooler and provide 4x better pressure relief than memory foam.
  • 1.5″ Transition Layer – This layer is made of 1.5″ of high-resilience foam that provides balance and serves as a transition between a soft top comfort layer and a firmer layer below. It provides deep compression support and works well for all sleeping positions as it is soft enough for side sleeping while it has the firmness necessary to properly support your body if you switch to your back or stomach.
  • 7″ Support Layer – This layer is 7″ of proprietary Nolah Signature ultra-grade core foundation foam designed to endure even the most extreme conditions.
  • 1″ Cooling and Support Layer – This layer is 1″ of firm supportive Nolah Air Foam designed to keep the mattress cool and provide the perfect amount of support and pressure relief for stomach sleepers and anyone else preferring firmer feel mattresses.

Firmness & Support

The Nolah Signature is designed to appeal to a wide range of sleepers and is unique in that it offers two firmness options in one mattress: it is soft on one side and firm on the other.

The soft side is made especially for side sleepers looking for extra-deep pressure relief on hips and shoulders and back sleepers looking for a cloud-like floating feeling.

Personally, I like softer mattresses, even though I tend to sink down in them more than in most other mattresses due to my heavier weight (230lbs.)

The soft side of the Nolah Signature 12″ mattress, which we felt to be around a 5 on the firmness scale (10 being the firmest), does a great job at supporting both my heavier weight and Kaye’s lighter weight, without causing us to feel “trapped in foam”.

The firm side is made for stomach sleepers and people looking for a firm mattress with the perfect balance of firmness and support, and it falls around an 8 on the firmness scale (out of 10, 10 being firmest).

In terms of support, the Nolah Signature 12″, having two sides, does a good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions.

Since Kaye and myself are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that offer enough give in the top comfort layer to cradle our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs. This mattress, when flipped to the softer side, is great for this.

It felt good on my hips and shoulders and did not cause any numbness or discomfort which I often experience with lower quality mattresses.

Back sleepers and stomach sleepers will find the firmer side of the Nolah Signature 12″ suitable for those styles as well, as it is firm enough to provide support and comfort for those sleeping styles without being too soft and causing excessive sinkage.

Kaye felt the firmer side of the Nolah Signature 12″ was of the perfect firmness as she generally likes mattresses with a firmer feel.

This mattress meets the firmness preferences of most sleepers, from those who like the softer/medium feel to those who want the firmer feel, just by flipping the mattress over.

Comfort

The fact that the Nolah Signature offers two comfort options in one mattress makes it a great fit for all those who are unsure of the firmness level that would best work for them.

Regardless of which side you pick, the same Cooling Nolah Air Foam will be used as the top comfort layer. It offers the same benefits on both sides, though it will be firmer on one side and softer on the other.

This foam is designed to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam, and it does a great job of relieving pressure points. It offers offer 4x better pressure relief than traditional memory foam and works perfectly well with the base foam layer to provide excellent comfort and support in all sleeping positions.

It is also more responsive than memory foam which makes changing positions during the night and getting in and out of bed much easier.

Sleeping Hot

The Nolah Signature mattress does a good job of providing a cool sleeping surface due to the use of the cooling proprietary Nolah Air Foam. We felt a very small amount of heat retention from the mattress when sleeping at times, which is common for all foam mattresses, but it was nothing too serious.

Breathable organic cotton allows the top layer of foam to breathe easily and lets some of the retained heat a place to go.

All in all, this mattress does a very good job at minimizing heat and keeping us cool and comfortable during the night.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

Sinkage and motion transfer really depend on which side of the Nolah Signature 12″ mattress you choose.

As sinkage is largely weight-dependent, I sunk down a lot more on the softer side. My heavier weight compressed through the top comfort layer more than Kaye did as she is half of my weight. But, as I have already mentioned, I prefer softer mattresses and the feeling of my body being contoured in foam which helps support my back and shoulders.

The 12″ Nolah Signature mattress did an excellent job at supporting my heavier weight, and it didn’t cause Kaye to “roll down into me” because of our weight difference.

The firm setting totally eliminated the possibility of sinking too much into the mattress due to the firmer support layer which supported our weights pretty well and distributed them evenly across the bed.

Likewise, edge support is better on the firm setting than the soft side for the same reason. But, overall the edge support is very good with this mattress and I did not compress the edges or sink down to the foundation of our bed like it is often the case with other memory foam mattresses. I also didn’t experience any feeling of the “rolling off” the edges.

Motion transfer was excellent with the Nolah Signature. It was minimal on both sides of the mattress which makes it an ideal choice for couples. You can move around and get in and out of bed easily without disrupting the sleep of your partner.

Smell / Off-Gassing

The Nolah Signature mattress had an average amount of off-gassing when taken out of the box and packaging, which can be expected from an all-foam model. However, the odor dissipated within a few hours and was nothing out of the ordinary when compared to many similarly constructed models.

Customer Service

Nolah provides more than the standard customer service you can expect from a “Bed In A Box” online retailer. This includes:

Price

This model is reasonably priced, coming in at $1299 for a Queen (click here to save $300). It is a bit pricier than the previous Nolah mattress, but this is still a good value for an extremely comfortable and supportive two-sided 12″ thick mattress built of the highest-quality foams.

Summary

If you’re looking for a premium dual-sided mattress capable of providing you with both comfort and support, then the 12″ Nolah Signature mattress might be just the right fit for your needs.

This new, updated version of the original Nolah mattress is a great all-foam model totally different from all other mattresses we have reviewed to date. The combination of foam layers used in the construction of this mattress all work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive sleeping surface ideal for all sleeping positions.

It offers, especially its soft side, that classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without causing you to feel trapped in foam, which is often the case with other all-foam mattresses. It is particularly good at supporting heavier sleepers and minimizing the degree of motion transfer which makes it ideal for couples.

It is designed to be more durable, sleep cooler and provide 4x better pressure relief than traditional memory foam mattresses.

All in all, the Nolah Signature 12″ is an excellent all-foam model that delivers amazing comfort and brings something new and innovative to the market just like its predecessor, and we heartily recommend it to everyone.
