Construction and Materials

It is 10″ thick and made up of 3 layers of proprietary foam:

  • 2″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of proprietary cooling Nolah Air Foam designed to provide superior pressure relief and comfort and ensure cooling during sleep. It will contour perfectly to your body without making you feel trapped in foam.
  • 1″ Transition Layer – This layer is 1″ of deep supportive high-resilience foam that is stronger and more durable than latex. It provides a healthy and responsive bounce and aids in transitioning motion between the upper and lower layers.
  • 7″ Support Layer – This layer is 7″ of high-density breathable base foam that provides durability and stability to the mattress, excellent support as well as deep compression support for the body.

Firmness & Support

The Nolah Original is a universal comfort model, and only comes in one firmness option, which we rate it at a 6-7 out of 10 (10 being the firmest). It initially was a little firm to me, as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, I tend to press through the top layer and feel more of the support layers in most mattresses.

However, after sleeping on the Nolah for about 2 weeks, it softened up more and became much more comfortable and supportive for my 230lb weight and large 6’+ frame.

The company has their own firmness scale on their site where they rate this mattress a little softer, in a range you can see below.

Kaye felt the Nolah was the perfect firmness, as she likes mattresses on the firmer end of the spectrum usually.

In terms of support, we feel this model does a really good job of providing excellent support in all sleeping positions. As we are primarily side sleepers, we like models that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.

It felt good on my hips and shoulders and did not cause any numbness or discomfort which I often experience with lower quality mattresses.

The Nolah is deceiving, in that it initially feels rather firm and not as cushioned. However, after sleeping on it for an extended amount of time, we found that our bodies adapted to it and molded to the memory foam without feeling stuck or trapped in the foam.

Its Air Foam combined with the high-resilience foam both work well together to provide the classic memory foam feeling of body hug and contour without feeling trapped. The layer of high-resilience foam does a good job at supporting our bodies and providing good responsiveness when changing positions during the night without causing excess motion transfer.

Sleeping Hot

The Nolah Original does a good job at providing a cool sleeping surface via the use of the proprietary Nolah Air Foam. We felt a small amount of body heat retention from the mattress when sleeping at times, which is common for all foam-constructed mattresses in our experience, but it wasn’t bad.

All in all, it does a very good job at minimizing heat during the night.  Check out our latest on Idle Sleep reviews.

Sinkage & Motion Transfer

The Nolah does an excellent job with sinkage and motion transfer, especially compared to most models we have reviewed. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.

The fact that I weigh around 230lbs tends to have a rather large bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on it. Kaye, who is half my weight, experiences much less sinkage than I do, but again this is to be expected due to her much lighter weight.

With the Nolah mattress, we noticed immediately that any movement by me during the night wasn’t felt by Kaye much at all. I also did not sink down through the mattress and compress it with my weight like often is the case with all foam mattresses.

Edge support is very good with this mattress, and better than most memory foam mattresses we have reviewed. I slept near the edge at time to test this and did not experience any of the “rolling off” the edges or having them compressed under my weight.

Smell / Off-Gassing

It had an average amount of off-gassing when taken out of the box and packaging, which can be expected from an all foam model. The odor dissipated within a night and was nothing out of the ordinary compared to many similarly constructed models.

Customer Service

It provides more than the standard customer service offerings you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online retailer. This includes:

This model is reasonably priced at $799 for a Queen, which is a good price given the quality materials and construction used. Also, you can SAVE $125 with our Memory Foam Talk coupon: MFTALK

The Nolah Original is a great all foam model that is a nice change from all the many copycat mattresses we often receive from new companies these days. The company really took time to create some innovative foam technology with the Nolah Air Foam which delivers on the promise of better, cooler sleep.

The combination of foam layers used in the design of this model work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive solution that is ideal for all sleeping positions. It is particularly very good at handling heavier sleepers and isolating motion and minimizing sinkage as well.

It provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without feeling trapped in the foam like other all foam mattresses, albeit with a bit of trade-off of less responsiveness from the all foam construction. The Air Foam does a great job at keeping the mattress cool when sleeping, which is very important for foam mattresses.

All in all, the Nolah is a very solid memory foam model that delivers on bringing something new and innovative to the market, and we recommend it for both individuals as well as couples.
