How to Tie a Mattress to a Car
Moving to another home is never easy, especially when you have to transport your mattress in a car.
Mattresses are big investments and unless your mattress is already old and needs a replacement you don’t want to leave it behind and you certainly want to transport it safely to your new place. So, what are you going to do?
In this article we will explain in detail what you need to do in order to safely transport your mattress in a car without damaging it. Last updated
Get Everything You Need
To transport a mattress in a car you don’t need a ton of supplies, but you do need a few things.
First of all you need to get a mattress bag to protect your mattress from damages and getting dirty and wet during transport. You can get a plastic mattress bag with a seal and vacuum the air out of it to compress a mattress and then fold it to make it easier to move. However, you can do this only with mattresses made entirely of flexible foams like memory foam or latex.
If you can’t find a mattress bag either ordinary or with a seal, you can use a plastic wrap and a packing tape.
Another option is to find a pair of old sheets, wrap them around your mattress and then secure them with packing tape or ratchet straps. If you choose ratchet straps, they will give you something to grip on while carrying a mattress to your car and make it easier for you to move it.
If you plan to put your mattress on the top of a car you are also going to need a sturdy rope. Get enough to wrap the whole mattress both lengthwise and around its middle. Make sure you buy more rope than you think you will need, just in case you need more for tying the mattress.
And also pay attention to how thick is the rope you are going to buy. It should be thick enough so it can hold your mattress secured to the top of your car the entire way, but it also shouldn’t be too thick that you can’t tie it.
Prepare Your Mattress for Travel
So, when you get everything you need, you should wrap your mattress like we explained. If you are using a plastic wrap, just make sure to secure it on tightly so that there are no air pockets that could be punctured during travel which can potentially result in damage to your mattress.
Wrapping your mattress properly will also ensure it stays dry during transport.
Prepare Your Car
Unless your car has a side rail or crossbars that the mattress can sit on top of, you should place the blankets or towels on the top of your car before you put the mattress there. This will not only provide additional protection for your mattress, but it will also protect your car from scratches.
You should also roll down all windows in your car so you can put the rope through them to secure the mattress to the top of your car.
Tying a Mattress to a Car
Now comes tying a mattress to a car. When doing this, you should make sure your mattress is centered. This will help maintain balance and prevent the mattress from overhanging and blocking your vision on the road.
Once you decide how you are going to place your mattress, you should work on securing it down.
If you don’t have those crossbars or a side rail, you can toss a rope lengthwise and secure it under your car and do the same across the width of your car in two places at least. Secure the ropes through your windows and avoid the window on the driver’s side.
Is Tying a Mattress to a Car Legal?
Whether tying a mattress to the top of your car is legal or not depends on the state where you live.
Many states don’t have laws that prohibit this, but if you don’t do it right, there is a risk of accidents and a police officer may stop you with the safety of other people in mind.
Moving to another place can be a complicated process, especially if there is no one around to help you with transporting your mattress and you have to do it on your own by using your car.
In such case you would have to tie it to the roof of your car and to make sure it safely gets to your new place, you should do this right.
