What Causes a Mattress to Slide off Bed Frame?

The first thing you should do is to find out what causes your mattress to slide off your frame so you can figure out how to make it stay in place all night.

Your mattress can slide off due to various reasons and here are some of them:

Lack of Friction

Lack of friction is one of the main reasons why your mattress may start sliding around. This happens more often with dual sided memory foam or latex mattresses.

The material used in the cover of a dual sided mattress is designed to provide a comfortable sleeping surface on both sides and such low-friction surface can’t get a good grip against your bed frame to keep the mattress in place, especially of you have a metal frame.

Inadequate Support

Your mattress may also slide because of your bed frame. If a bed frame you use is too big for your mattress, or if it doesn’t have any grippers or rails that prevent the mattress from moving around, it may cause the mattress to slide.

Also, if you place your metal bed frame on a slippery surface, it may slide and your mattress will shift as well following the bed frame.

The Age of Your Mattress

The age of your mattress is another reason why it may slide off your bed frame. As the time passes, after continuous use, your mattress will accumulate dirt and your body oil at the bottom, on the side that touches the bed frame and this will cause sliding.

How to Keep Your Mattress in Place All Night

Use Rubber rug pads

Some kinds of rubber mating that is usually used for flooring can stop your mattress sliding.

Rubber mating creates more friction and prevents the mattress from moving around on your bed frame. All you need to do is to measure your mattress and get a slightly larger rubber pad, place it on the top of your bed frame and then put back your mattress.

Carpet Tape

Carpet tape is usually used to keep carpets and rugs in place, but you can also use it to stop your mattress from moving around on your bed frame.

It will do the thing, but it is only a short-term solution and sometimes it can also leave a residue and result in loose threads.

Create Side Rails for Your Metal Bed Frame

Sometimes, carpet tape and rubber pads can’t keep your mattress from sliding, especially if you have metal bed frame.

In such case, you can consider creating side rails for your metal bed frame. Measure your mattress fully and then you can buy appropriate trim stocks and place them around the edges of your bed.

You can start by using ordinary wooden sticks on each side of your bed. They should be able to hold most mattresses in place, but you must be careful as they won’t be able to keep your mattress in place if you are a restless sleeper and you tend to move around a lot.

Use Elastic straps

You can also stop your mattress from sliding off metal frame by using elastic straps. Bend the straps around your bed frame and pull them over your mattress before you put your sheets or mattress cover on.

However, you should be careful when doing this as the elastic straps can sometimes leave a dent in some softer foam.

Modify Your Bed Frame or Move It Close to the Wall

You can also try to modify your bed frame a bit if none of the options mentioned above work. Add some extra sections that can help keep your mattress in place.

This could work for you, but if you want some prettier option, then you should consider something else, like moving your mattress close to the wall. This won’t stop your mattress from sliding completely but at least it will only be capable of moving in one direction.

A mattress that continuously slides off a bed frame during the night can be a huge problem that can prevent you from getting enough of a restful night’s sleep and cause some health issues as well.

There are a few ways to keep your mattress in place all night long and we mentioned some of them above.

We hope that we were able to provide you with the information you need and whatever option you choose, we hope it will work for you.
