Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Series Review
Our Nest Bedding mattress review of the Alexander Signature series. Nest Bedding is known for their highly rated Love Bed, as well as the one we are reviewing here – the Alexander Signature Series memory foam mattress, one of our personal favorite beds on the market!
Nest Bedding is not your typical online mattress company. The company has several retail stores serving the Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York markets and has expanded into online sales as well.
Nest is known for having great customer service, quality American made products, and very good prices for their products.

Not only does the company produce mattresses, but they also offer a full line of organic and natural, bedding such as organic sheet sets, organic blankets, organic pillows, and organic duvet covers.
Note: This is an UPDATED review of the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Series mattress, the company recently updated their product line with enhancements that make this already great mattress even better!
Construction and Materials
The Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Series has four layers making up an almost 13″ mattress:
- 1.5″ Cover – Cotton and polyester quilted cover with 1.5″ of soft foam inside it.
- 4″ Top Comfort layer – the top layer is 4″ of 4lb gel memory foam. This helps to absorb heat from the sleeping surface and disperse that through the sides and bottom of the mattress.
- 1″ Middle Support / Comfort layer – this is 1″ of 4lb visco foam. Visco foam provides great bounce, responsiveness, and cooling. It’s an ideal layer to have due to all of the comfort benefits.
- 2″ Middle / Lower Cooling layer – this is 2″ of SmartFlow Air Flow foam which is designed to help with heat transfer and cooling throughout the mattress.
- 4″ Bottom foundation layer – this is a 4″ layer of 1.8lb high-density Edge Support foam which is convoluted support foam. This layer acts as a foundational base for the mattress.
The above construction details are for the medium firmness level. Nest doesn’t believe in the “Universal Firmness” concept, instead offers the Alexander Signature in 3 firmness options:
- Soft – 1.5″ super soft foam in the cover, 2″ 4lb gel memory foam, 2″ 4lb visco foam, 3″ SmartFlow Air Flow foam, 4″ of 1.8lb Edge support base layer.
- Medium – 1.5″ super soft foam in the cover, 4″ 4lb gel memory foam, 1″ 4lb visco foam, 2″ SmartFlow Air Flow foam, 4″ of 1.8lb Edge support base layer.
- Firm – no super soft foam in the cover, 2″ 4lb gel memory foam, 3″ SmartFlow Air Flow foam, 6″ of 1.8lb Edge support base layer.
We have slept on all their firmness models and will provide our opinion on each in this Nest Alexander mattress review!
The cover is a nice swirled brush stroke type pattern on the top piece of fabric, with the sides built from both mesh and suede. The materials have a quality feel to them and lends to the overall luxuriousness of this mattress. Nest updated the cover and materials as part of the redesign and they really did a great job in this regard.
Firmness & Support
As stated above, the Nest Alexander Signature mattress comes in 3 firmness levels:
- Soft (3 on the firmness scale, with 10 being firmest)
- Medium (6 on firmness scale, with 10 being firmest)
- Luxury Firm (8 on firmness scale, with 10 being firmest)
We felt that the Medium Alexander Signature mattress was a little firmer than advertised. However, this this is also in comparison to the Soft which was really soft and plush. Overall, the Medium is most likely the best choice for the majority of sleepers unless you really prefer a softer or firmer feel.
For me personally as a heavier individual, I felt the Soft was definitely softer as expected but didn’t feel like I sunk down into a hole. It did not cause any back or hip discomfort which is sometimes the case with soft mattresses for me.
The Firm was a little too firm for my taste, but that is just personal preference.
As a couple, Kaye and I preferred the Medium model as it balanced both of our preferences (mine softer, hers firmer).
In terms of support, the various layers of memory foam do a good job balancing your body when sleeping. The combination of Visco foam and gel memory foam support you in a variety of sleep positions such as side as well as back and stomach.
Both Kaye and I are side sleepers and felt our back and shoulders were supported well when sleeping on the Nest Alexander, and both slept without pain or discomfort.
The Nest Bedding Alexander Signature‘s quilted cover is padded with 1.5″ of super soft foam in both the soft and medium options which gives it a very soft and comfortable feel.
This top layer is very plush and combined with the gel memory foam layer beneath it provide for a responsive feel without feeling stuck down in the mattress. There is some sinkage when sitting upright, but overall the mattress is very comfortable when lying down in all positions.
The Luxury Firm model is recommended for back and stomach sleepers, and provides a much firmer feel for those that prefer this type of firmness in their mattresses.
The Medium model is recommended for the majority of sleepers and is good for back, side, and to a degree stomach sleepers. Approximately 92% of sleepers will choose this model due to its flexibility in sleeping positions and overall comfort.
The Soft model is super soft and plush, and recommended for those side sleepers that want to be enveloped in a mattress. I personally like the softness of this model as a heavier side sleeper and it really is luxurious and comfortable.
We did not feel any discomfort or noticeable heat from the Nest Alexander Signature Select mattress during our experience sleeping on all models of this bed.
The materials balance you more on top of the mattress instead of enveloping you in deep foam which helps with cooling, and the gel foam cooling layer clearly does the job. Even with the Soft model it doesn’t trap you in foam like many memory foam mattresses do.
The combination of the cover with its breathability and the gel cooling layer as well as the design with the SmartFlow Air Flow foam deeper in the mattress all work together to promote heat dissipation and cooling during the night.
Sinkage and Motion Transfer
As we always say, sinkage depends a lot on the degree of sleeper weight as well as the firmness of the mattress.
By design, the Soft model is going to have more sinkage than the Firm, as it envelopes your body more as expected. As I weigh around 230 lbs, I tend to sink into most mattresses more than Kaye, who is half my weight.
The updated Alexander Signature Series has better edge support overall compared to the previous model. One of the improvements to the Alexander was this improved edge support which is very noticeable in the new Alexander Signature.
When lying in a sleeping position, there is a much more balanced feel with your body supported evenly.
There wasn’t the sensation that Kaye sometimes feels with other mattresses of “rolling towards me” due to me weighing twice as much as she does, which is important for a couple.
The Alexander does a pretty good job in terms of motion transfer. We have found this to be a concern with many mattresses when sleeping as a couple where one person is significantly heavier than the other such as myself.
Kaye woke up a few times when I changed positions but it was not out of the ordinary in terms of movement. Again, depending on the firmness model chosen this varies. We found the Soft naturally had more motion transfer but the Firm much less so.
Smell / Off-Gassing
Upon opening the new updated Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Series mattresses we did not notice much smell and off-gassing.
The company claims there is no odor, with the previous version we felt this wasn’t the case, but the new Alexander did not have any noticeable odor that needed to be off-gassed over time.
This was one of our few critiques with the previous version, which was not an issue whatsoever with the new model.
Being a smaller company, Nest Bedding is able to be very responsive to their customers. We spoke directly with Joe Alexander, the owner, as well as worked with his son Christian to resolve some shipping issues that were not their fault nor obligation, yet they bent over backwards to assist us.
Joe and the team at Nest are super friendly and helpful and this really goes a long way to a great purchase experience.
The company offers many of the same features as other online mattress retailers, such as:
- 100 night Trial period
- 20 year Warranty
- Free Shipping

The combination of high quality materials, multiple combinations of different foam layers, and a soft luxurious padded cover all contribute to the success of this mattress. Add the multiple firmness options as well, and the Alexander Signature Select is a good choice for all sleepers.
