Construction and Materials
The Eight mattress is a 10″ all foam mattress made up of 4 layers of foam and an integrated technology layer embedded within the cover
- 2″ Top Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of reactive foam that provides bounce and response like latex but with the foam feel. This helps provide cooling and comfort for the mattress.
- 2″ Contour Layer – This layer is 2″ of memory foam to provide contour and pressure relief.
- 2″ Transition Layer – This layer is 2″ of transition foam that provides a transition layer between the upper comfort and contour layers of foam and the foundation below.
- 4″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 4″ of base foam that provides support for the mattress as well as deep compression support for the body.
The cover of the Eight mattress combined their innovative technology layer which overlays the mattress and that attaches to the internet-enabled hub which interfaces with an app on your smart phone and provides a wealth of data and sleep-related applications.
The Eight Sleep Tracker is an app that works with iOS as well as Android and captures data about your sleep habits, provides you with graphs and feedback about the quality of your sleep, and many other features.
The app also provides the ability to regulate heat (bed warming) for each sleeper on the mattress. You can control warming on each side of the mattress to provide individual control and comfort.
The app also enables integration with Smart Home applications, has a built-in white noise maker, a sleep timer / alarm which gently wakes you up, and many more features.
The Eight Sleep Tracker uses ballistocardiography sensors to track your sleep. It senses body movement, and other factors like breathing rate to determine when you’re awake or asleep, in and out of bed, and different sleep stages.
Really cool stuff, and something nobody else is doing on the market these days.
Firmness & Support
The Eight Sleep mattress is a universal comfort mattress, and only comes in one firmness option, which we rate it at a 6-7 out of 10 (10 being the firmest).
The Eight mattress feels a little firm to me, as I am significantly heavier than Kaye, at around 230 lbs, and I tend to press through the top comfort layers and feel more of the support layers in most mattresses. This was no exception with the Eight mattress.
As we are primarily side sleepers, we like mattresses that provide enough give in the top comfort layer to support our shoulders and hips, while also having the firmness if we switch to our stomachs and backs.
The Eight did a good job at supporting us in all sleeping positions,
The Eight does a good job supporting both my heavy weight as well as Kaye’s lighter weight, although with more sinkage for my heavier weight, which we will discuss in more detail below.
The Eight mattress itself has the classic memory foam feel of “sleeping in” vs “sleeping on top of” which is characteristic of many latex and hybrid mattresses. We are big fans of memory foam mattresses for the hug and contour they usually offer but that some mattresses don’t get right.
The Eight Sleep memory foam construction does a great job of providing the contour and body hug that we like of traditional memory foam, but without the “stuck” feeling that often happens with all foam mattresses.
Again, it does feel a little on the firm side to me, and the addition of the “smart” cover material did contribute to this I felt, as the additional technology layer seemed to diminish some of the comfort to the mattress.
As a traditional memory foam mattress, without much cooling technology built in, we did feel the Eight slept a little warm compared to many other memory foam mattresses with gel or other cooling layers.
The Eight app and cover also provides heating capabilities, which is great for cooler climates, but not something we chose to use or most likely would use as it isn’t cold enough to use where we live in Texas.
The Eight didn’t make us feel sticky or sweaty, which is often a problem for us as a couple with some traditional foam mattresses, but we did feel a little more heat retention especially for us living in Texas where it gets quite hot.
Sinkage & Motion Transfer
The Eight Sleep mattress does a decent job with sinkage and motion transfer, although at 10″ it does have its limitations just due to the overall thickness and not the best support for heavier sleepers such as myself. As we always preach, sinkage (and motion transfer) is largely weight dependent.
The fact that I am a heavier sleeper and weigh around 230lbs tends to have a significant bearing on the degree of sinkage I experience when sitting and lying on a mattress. I tend to press through the top comfort layers and rest on the lower support layers, and this was the case as well with me and the Eight due to my heavier weight.
By contrast, Kaye, who weighs much less than me, did not experience the degree of sinkage that I did, but this is normal for us.
Edge support was about average with the Eight which again, my heavier weight tends to cause problems when sitting on the edge and compressing the mattress. This is something that often is an issue for me as as larger, heavier sleeper, and especially for mattresses that are 10″ or less.
There was minimal motion transfer with the Eight mattress, due to the memory foam construction which by design tends to have less movement when sleeping with a partner compared to say, latex or hybrid coil constructed mattresses.
Smell / Off-Gassing
The Eight Sleep mattress has an average amount of smell upon opening the box. Most all foam mattresses we have encountered tend to have a decent degree of smell and off-gassing and the Eight was about the same in this matter. It did go away after a night or two, however, which is normal.
Eight Sleep provides the standard amount of customer service you can expect in a “Bed In A Box” online mattress retailers, with a 10 year warranty and very friendly customer support.

The Eight is priced more reasonably than most mattresses we have tested for all the features they offer. Coming in at $1050 for a Queen, which is a great price given the quality materials and construction used in this mattress. You can get $50 off an Eight by clicking here and entering code: MFT50
The Eight Sleep mattress is a great all foam mattress that does a great job of delivering a comfortable nights sleep at a great price, with the unique and innovative technology component that is a first in the mattress industry.
The Eight mattress combined with the iOS and Android based sleep tracking, temperature regulating, and smart home integration link is something that nobody else is doing and which helps you diagnose your sleep quality, customize your sleep temperature, and many other great features.
The materials, construction and the design of the Eight mattress all work together to provide a very comfortable yet supportive mattress that is ideal for all sleeping positions as well as for couples.
The Eight Sleep mattress provides the classic memory foam feel of body hug and contour without feeling trapped in the foam like other all foam mattresses often do. There was a moderate amount of heat retention most likely due to the technology layer in the exterior cover, but not too significant to be an issue.
We are very impressed with the technology component of the Eight Sleep mattress and highly recommend it for sleepers looking to monitor, analyze, and have more control over their sleep environment, which is an exciting innovation.
Hopefully our Eight Sleep mattress review was helpful in your next mattress purchase!
